“No.” Henry’s mouth twitched, though there was no humor in it. “I expect you to hate me. That part has always been easy.”

Ruth moved closer to the table. Her eyes went from the ledger to Henry’s face.

“Why is your name on it?” she asked.

Henry inhaled slowly.

“Because I signed the first transfer.”

Nobody spoke.

He had been their father’s chief financial officer then. Their father’s friend. The man who brought Daniel a leather-bound journal when he graduated from college and told him not to become the sort of man who confused money with authority.

Daniel had admired him once.

Maybe that was why he had hated him so thoroughly afterward.

“You helped him,” Daniel said.

“Yes.”

The answer landed harder than a denial would have.
