It was smaller than Daniel remembered. Gold, oval-faced, with a rounded lid and a thin chain curled around it. His grandmother’s initials had been engraved on the back decades before Daniel was born. The metal still held the soft warmth of old money, the kind that survived wars, divorces, bad investments, and people who believed their names made them immortal.

His mother had worn it in her coat pocket whenever she traveled.

Daniel remembered that much.

He remembered her opening it at the breakfast table when he was a child. The tiny ticking sound. The way she would smile whenever she heard it, though she never explained why.

“It was supposed to be sold,” Henry said.

Daniel’s eyes snapped toward him.

“Your father had a buyer. Someone in Geneva. The money would have covered one more round of debts. One more chance for him to pretend nothing was wrong.”
