Evelyn looked at Henry.
“You knew we would hate you.”
“Yes.”
“And you let us.”
“Yes.”
For the first time, Henry looked old.
Not dignified old. Not the polished old age he carried into boardrooms, with brushed silver hair and cufflinks and a voice that made bankers sit straighter.
Just tired.
“My wife was sick,” he said. “That’s not an excuse. It’s just true. I had already told her I would fix things. I thought if I could get the watch out of the house and keep Malcolm from selling it, I could come back later with proof. I could make it clean.”
He looked down at his bloody thumb.
“Nothing stayed clean.”
Daniel wanted to hit him again.
The desire came so suddenly he almost moved.
