Daniel looked at Mark Ellison.
Mark did not speak. He did not need to. His face had already answered.
The trust money had not simply disappeared in the past.
It had created a liability.
A liability that could reach forward.
A liability that could take the mansion, the foundation, the family name, and all the fragile things Daniel had been holding together with favors and borrowed money.
For a while nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn rose from the sofa with the watch in her hand.
She walked to Daniel.
He expected her to give it to him.
Instead she held it out toward Henry.
Henry did not take it.
“I don’t want it,” Evelyn said.
