Ruth had spent the last year watching him take meetings in rooms he hated, shaking hands with people who spoke about the Mercer name as if it were an old building worth saving. She had watched him sell two properties, cancel staff bonuses, postpone repairs, and tell Evelyn everything would be fine with a confidence that made her want to throw a glass at him.

He had not been trying to save a foundation.

He had been trying to keep the house from becoming proof that his father had failed.

Henry spoke again.

“I brought the watch because the appraisal will uncover the trust records. I couldn’t keep it hidden once that happened.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“So you were protecting yourself.”

“Yes.”

The honesty of it knocked the anger sideways.

Henry continued.

“I was also protecting you.”

“From finding out after you had mortgaged everything.”
