“Your father told her she was confused. Said the medication was affecting her memory. Said she was tired. He said it to the doctors, to the lawyers, to everyone who found it convenient to believe him.”
Ruth looked toward Evelyn.
Evelyn had gone pale.
Their mother had been ill then. Not dying, not yet. But tired in a way Daniel had never understood. She had spent long afternoons in the upstairs sitting room with the curtains half-closed. She had forgotten names. She had cried when Daniel was late for dinner and then apologized for it as if she had spilled wine on a carpet.
He had been twenty. He had thought she was fragile.
He had not understood that someone could be made fragile.
“You let him do that?” Daniel said.
