“I won’t.”

“Not tonight.”

“No.”

Daniel walked to the table and picked up the watch.

It was cold in his palm.

For a second he thought about putting it in his pocket, the way his mother had. Holding it close. Claiming it. Carrying it upstairs and locking it in the safe where the family kept the old silver and the letters nobody opened.

Instead he placed it back inside the black gift bag.

Then he turned to Mark Ellison.

“Call the trust attorneys,” Daniel said. “Tell them we’ll cooperate.”

Mark studied him.

“You understand what that could mean.”

“Yes.”

“It could mean losing the house.”

Daniel looked around the room.

The cream walls. The molding. The chandelier. The polished floor that had hosted weddings, funerals, Christmas dinners, arguments, apologies, and a thousand long silences.
