“You should have told us,” Daniel said.
“I should have.”
“You should have gone to the police.”
“I should have.”
“You should have told my mother not to protect him.”
“I did.”
That stopped Daniel.
Henry’s face shifted.
“She wouldn’t hear it. She said Malcolm was still her husband. She said he was frightened. She said if I exposed him, your family would become a story people told over cocktails.”
Daniel glanced around the living room.
The guests had become exactly that audience.
Ruth saw the thought cross his face.
“Not tonight,” she said to the others.
Her voice was not loud, but it carried.
The two men near the hallway looked at each other.
