“And then I took the watch.”

“That was your answer?”

“It was the only thing I could take without triggering an audit.”

Daniel stared at him.

The first sharp thing in Henry’s voice appeared then.

“You think I was brave? I wasn’t. I was afraid of him. I was afraid of losing my job. I was afraid of what your mother would do if she knew how long I’d been helping him hide things. So I took the watch, I hid it, and I told myself I had saved something.”

His eyes fell to the gold object.

“I saved a watch.”

The sentence sat between them.

Behind the hallway, one of the investors set down his drink.

Nobody asked him to leave.

Nobody asked anybody to leave.

That was the terrible thing about wealthy parties. People learned to stay very still when something awful happened. They learned to make themselves look invisible while memorizing everything.
