Chương 31

Daniel’s cheek muscles still ached from clenching his teeth. Henry’s lip was still bleeding. The music had stopped. The guests were gone. Half-finished champagne sat on tables around them, warming slowly.

Nothing had been fixed.

His father was still dead.

His mother was still gone.

The money was still missing.

The house might still be lost.

But the lie had changed shape.

It was no longer a thing Daniel could point at from across the room and call someone else’s fault.

Ruth looked at the black gift bag.

“What are you going to do with it?” she asked.

Daniel looked at the watch inside.

“For now?” he said.

He paused.

“For now, nobody touches it.”

Henry gave a small nod.

Evelyn laughed once, quietly. It broke into a sniffle, then another laugh.

Daniel looked at her.

May you like

“What?”

She wiped beneath one eye.
