Chương 4

Henry bent down carefully. His knees seemed to bother him more than he would ever admit. He reached for the bag and lifted it from the rug.

The object inside shifted against the tissue.

Gold. Rounded. Familiar in a way Daniel hated.

The Marlowe watch.

For eighteen years, the watch had existed in Daniel’s mind as a missing piece of a night nobody in the family ever discussed honestly. His mother’s birthday dinner. A rainstorm pressing against the windows. Henry Vale leaving through the kitchen door with his coat half-buttoned. Daniel’s father standing in the hallway with his mouth turned flat and white.

By morning, the watch was gone.

By noon, Henry had become a thief.

Daniel’s father had said it only once, quietly, as if he were informing the housekeeper that a pipe had burst.

Henry took it.

That was all.
