“You always wanted the truth,” he said. “You just wanted it shaped in a way that made you feel clean.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Ruth saw it before anyone else. She had known Daniel long enough to recognize the small shift behind his anger, the place where fear entered and made his eyes go still.
“You came here to humiliate us,” Daniel said.
“No.”
Henry looked toward the hallway, at the two men in dark suits. One was a venture capitalist from Chicago. The other chaired the board of a preservation trust Daniel had been courting for six months. Their money would keep the Mercer estate from being sold. Their approval would give Daniel another year.
“I came here because you invited half the people who need to know what your father did.”
Daniel’s body went rigid.
