He noticed a faint smear of champagne near the table, a ribbon of gold on the glass. He noticed Ruth’s bare left foot where she had slipped off one heel. He noticed Henry’s shirt collar had come loose at the neck.
Small things.
The kind people saw when there was nothing left to perform.
“Play the rest of the recording,” Daniel said.
Henry did not move.
Daniel looked at him.
“You said you came with the truth.”
Henry nodded.
Ruth handed Daniel the phone.
The next audio file was shorter.
His mother’s voice came first.
Daniel had not heard it clearly in years. He had recordings, of course. Birthday voicemails. An old message asking him to bring tomatoes home from the market. But this was different. This was her tired voice. The one from the end.
