He had not noticed how often he had looked away.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. A message from his chief operating officer. A photograph from earlier in the evening: Daniel standing under the chandelier, smiling beside Henry Vale, before the strike, before the blood, before the watch had returned.
Daniel almost laughed.
Instead he put the phone away.
“Why bring it now?” he asked Henry.
Henry was still standing near the coffee table.
He had not taken off his suit jacket. Not even after Daniel hit him.
“The house is being appraised,” Henry said.
“That isn’t an answer.”
“No. It isn’t.”
Henry looked toward the ceiling, then back to Daniel.
“Three weeks ago, I learned you were preparing to borrow against the estate again.”
Daniel’s jaw clenched.
“To save the foundation.”

“You don’t know anything about what we’re doing.”
