Chương 14

Daniel picked up the phone.

The audio file waited beneath the ledger.

He pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then his father’s voice came through.

Malcolm Mercer had been dead fourteen months, but Daniel knew that voice instantly. It had the same clipped patience. The same exhausted superiority. The same way of making even an apology sound like a correction.

“I need you to take the watch,” Malcolm said.

Another voice answered. Henry’s. Younger, sharper.

“She’ll notice.”

“She notices everything now. That’s the problem.”

“You can’t sell it.”

“I can sell whatever I own.”

“It isn’t yours.”

There was a pause.

Then Malcolm laughed. Not loudly. Almost kindly.

“You’ve been cashing my checks for fifteen years, Henry. Don’t develop principles now.”

The file clicked.

A chair scraped faintly in the dining room.
