Chương 8

Daniel knew enough about his family’s money to recognize the old Mercer letterhead. His father had used it on everything, even grocery lists. The paper had yellowed at the edges. The names were typed in blue-black ink.

Malcolm Mercer.

Henry Vale.

Clara Mercer.

Daniel’s mother.

His own breathing began to sound distant.

The page described a transfer from the Clara Mercer Family Trust into a private account Daniel had never heard of. The amount made his stomach fold in on itself.

Evelyn crossed the room and stopped beside him.

“What is that?” she whispered.

Daniel did not answer.

Henry did.

“Your father took the money over three years. He used some of it to cover debts. He used some of it to keep the company alive. He used some of it because he was too proud to admit the family had stopped being rich long before anyone else noticed.”

Daniel looked up.

“You expect me to believe you?”
