For a moment, he wanted to let them leave. Let them carry the story out into the city, into their clubs and offices and private dinners. Let the Mercer name finally become what it had always been beneath the marble and silver and polite charities.
Then something in him resisted.
Not pride.
Fatigue, maybe.
“No,” Daniel said.
The men stopped.
“This is my home,” he continued. “You don’t need to leave like you’ve seen something illegal.”
Henry gave a quiet, bitter laugh.
Daniel looked back at him.
“Not yet,” he said.
Ruth’s eyes flicked toward him, warning and relief mixed together.
Daniel faced the guests.
