Daniel’s fist remained closed by his side.

Henry did not raise his hands. He did not return the blow. He only looked at Daniel with the tired patience of a man who had spent years expecting a door to open and something ugly to be waiting behind it.

“You could have asked,” Henry said.

Daniel laughed once. It came out dry and wrong.

“I asked when I was nineteen. You told me it wasn’t my business.”

“It wasn’t.”

“It was my mother’s watch.”

Henry’s eyes lowered for half a second, not in guilt exactly, but in recognition.

Then Daniel noticed the black gift bag on the rug beside the coffee table.

It had not been there before.

The handles were stiff, the kind used by jewelers who wanted the packaging to feel nearly as important as what was inside. White tissue paper showed at the top. Beneath it, something gold caught the chandelier light.

Daniel’s throat tightened.
