Chương 2

The living room had been arranged for a party that had already begun to look expensive in photographs. Candlelight warmed the cream walls. A string quartet drifted faintly from the far dining room. The dark floor shone around the pale rug, and the gold-framed coffee table reflected the chandelier in broken little diamonds.

Behind Henry, two men in dark suits stood near the hallway with their drinks lowered. They had been talking about the Mercer Foundation five minutes earlier. Now they looked like they wished they had accepted their cars when the valet first offered them.

Evelyn Mercer sat rigidly on the cream sofa in her champagne-colored gown, one hand wrapped around a champagne flute she had stopped drinking from. Beside her, Daniel’s wife, Ruth, held her own glass in her lap without seeming to notice it.
