People gathered coats in awkward silence. A woman Daniel barely knew kissed Evelyn’s cheek and whispered something useless. The investors accepted their phones from the hallway table. The servants moved carefully through the edges of the room, collecting abandoned glasses with the practiced grace of people who had seen rich families break before.
Within fifteen minutes, the mansion was almost silent.
Only Daniel, Ruth, Evelyn, Henry, and the two men from the hallway remained.
Daniel had asked the men to stay.
They were not friends. Not really. They were potential partners. Men who understood numbers, trustees, debt, and the quiet violence of inheritance. Daniel did not want them because he trusted them. He wanted witnesses.
One of them, a gray-haired man named Mark Ellison, stood near the fireplace with both hands in his pockets.
“You should call counsel,” Mark said.
