Chương 28

Evelyn sat down again.

Henry’s eyes were wet, though no tears fell.

“Why didn’t you tell us when Dad died?” Daniel asked.

Henry did not answer right away.

“Because I hated him,” he said finally.

Daniel blinked.

Henry looked almost ashamed.

“I hated him for making me part of it. I hated him for making your mother carry it. I hated him for dying before anyone could make him answer for it. And when he was gone, I looked at the two of you and I thought, they get to mourn him as a father. They get to keep some part of him untouched.”

He swallowed.

“I wanted that to rot.”

The words were ugly enough to feel real.

Ruth looked away.

Evelyn stared at the watch.

Daniel stood again, slower this time.

“Thank you,” he said.

Henry’s expression changed.

Daniel held up a hand.

“Don’t mistake that for forgiveness.”
