Chương 1

"""The rain had been falling for hours when Daniel Carter rushed through the hospital entrance with a fear he could no longer hide.

His dark jacket was soaked at the shoulders, and his gray hair clung slightly to his forehead as he pushed past the crowded waiting area.

Every step toward the emergency wing felt heavier than the last because he knew the woman waiting behind those doors might never forgive him.

He had replayed the last conversation in his mind a thousand times.

He had heard her tired voice asking him to listen.

He had watched her walk away with tears in her eyes.

Now he would give anything to hear her speak again.

When Daniel reached the hospital room, he stopped for a moment outside the door.

Through the glass window, he saw Emily lying motionless on the white hospital bed.

Her long blonde hair rested against the pillow, her face pale under the cold hospital lights.

Machines surrounded her, quietly recording every fragile sign that she was still fighting.

A young doctor stood near the bed, reviewing the information on a tablet while watching Emily carefully.

Daniel opened the door slowly, but his expression changed the instant he saw her.

The fear he had been holding back broke through.

He moved forward quickly, grabbing the edge of the hospital bed with one hand as if the bed itself was the only thing keeping him standing.

His other hand lifted toward Emily's face, desperate to make sure she was real.

Then he stopped.

His fingers froze only inches away from her cheek.

The memory of how fragile she looked hit him all at once.

His shoulders dropped slightly, and his breathing became uneven.

"Wake up... please, look at me," Daniel whispered, his voice breaking with emotion.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then Emily's eyes moved slowly beneath her heavy eyelids.

Her breathing remained shallow, but she recognized the voice beside her.

"I'm still here..." she said softly.

Daniel closed his eyes for a brief moment, fighting back the tears that had formed.

He had imagined so many terrible outcomes during the drive to the hospital.

He had imagined never hearing her voice again.

He had imagined arriving too late.

But she was still there.

She was still fighting.

The doctor stepped closer but remained quiet, allowing the two people in front of him to share the moment.

Daniel carefully sat beside the bed, never taking his eyes away from Emily.

His hand trembled as he reached into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out a small white card with black writing across it.

Emily noticed the card immediately.

Her expression changed slightly, even though she was too weak to move.

Daniel looked at the card, then back at her.

"What happened to you?" he asked.

His voice carried confusion, pain, and guilt all at once.

Emily slowly turned her head toward the window.

For a moment, it seemed like she wanted to answer but could not find the strength.

Daniel leaned closer.

"You don't have to protect me anymore," he said quietly.

Emily blinked slowly.

A single tear moved down the side of her face, but she did not look away.

The doctor observed the exchange from a short distance.

He could see that the injuries were not the only thing hurting Emily.

There were wounds between these two people that no machine could measure.

Daniel placed the card carefully near Emily's hand.

He did not force her to look at it.

He did not demand answers.

He simply waited.

The room became quiet except for the soft sounds of the medical equipment.

Daniel remembered the first day he met Emily.

She had been standing outside a small coffee shop during a storm, holding an umbrella that was broken from the wind.

She had laughed when she realized the umbrella was useless.

That laugh had stayed with him for years.

It was the sound of someone who found hope even in difficult moments.

Now that same person was lying in front of him, exhausted and vulnerable.

Daniel reached for her hand.

At first, he was afraid she would pull away.

He was afraid that after everything, she would no longer want him there.

But Emily did not move away.

Her fingers remained still against his palm.

"I should have listened," Daniel said.

His voice became quieter.

"I should have believed you when you told me something was wrong."

Emily closed her eyes.

Her breathing changed slightly.

She was not ready to forgive him.

Not yet.

But she was listening.

The doctor finally stepped forward.

"She needs to rest," he said calmly.

"Stay calm."

Daniel nodded without looking away from Emily.

"I won't leave," he replied.

The doctor studied his expression and recognized the seriousness behind those words.

Outside the hospital room, footsteps passed in the hallway, but inside everything felt frozen in time.

Daniel stayed beside Emily, holding the card and her hand at the same time.

He wanted answers.

He wanted to know who had hurt her.

He wanted to understand why she had hidden the truth.

But more than anything, he wanted her to survive.

Emily slowly opened her eyes again.

This time, she looked directly at him.

There was fear in her expression.

There was pain.

But there was also something else.

A small sign that she still trusted him enough to stay.

Daniel noticed her fingers move slightly.

At first, he thought he imagined it.

Then he felt it.

Emily was gently holding his fingers.

His entire body went still.

The tension that had controlled him for hours finally began to release.

He lowered his head, holding her hand carefully as if it were something precious.

The doctor watched silently from nearby.

He knew this moment mattered more than any explanation.

The hospital room remained cold and quiet, but the space between Daniel and Emily felt different now.

May you like

The distance created by anger, fear, and regret was slowly becoming smaller.

Daniel looked at the woman he almost lost and promised himself he would never ignore her pain again.
