Chương 1

"The rain had stopped only minutes earlier when Daniel heard the desperate pounding against his front door.
He was standing in the quiet kitchen of his large stone house, staring at the muddy footprints spreading across the entrance floor, when another frantic knock echoed through the hallway.
The sound was not like a visitor asking to be welcomed inside.
It was the sound of someone running out of time.
Daniel moved quickly toward the entrance, his footsteps heavy against the polished stone.
He had spent years learning how to stay calm when situations became dangerous, but something about the fear in those knocks made his chest tighten.
When he opened the door, he froze.
Two children stood on the wet stone steps beneath the soft glow of the outdoor lantern.
The boy was around seven years old, with messy light brown hair, a dirty face, and shaking hands wrapped tightly around the smaller girl beside him.
The girl looked only five or six, her brown hair tied into a small bun, her clothes covered in mud, and her eyes filled with the kind of fear no child should ever carry.
They looked exhausted.
They looked lost.
And they looked like they had been running for a long time.
Daniel stepped forward slowly, lowering his voice so he would not frighten them.
"Are you hurt?"
The boy did not answer immediately.
He only looked behind himself toward the darkness beyond the garden gate.
The girl moved closer to him, hiding half of her face against his arm.
Daniel noticed the way the boy stood in front of her despite being terrified himself.
It was a protective instinct that reminded him of someone he had once been.
"Come inside," Daniel said gently.
"You are safe here."
The boy finally looked up at him.
His eyes were filled with uncertainty, as if he wanted to believe those words but had heard promises before that were never kept.
Before Daniel could say anything else, a sudden sound came from outside the property.
A branch snapped near the bushes.
The children immediately reacted.
The boy grabbed the girl's hand and pulled her backward.
The girl's breathing became faster.
Daniel's expression changed.
The calm kindness on his face disappeared, replaced by focused awareness.
He looked toward the dark garden path.
Someone was there.
The children had not just been wandering.
They had been escaping.
Daniel stepped in front of them without hesitation.
The boy stared at him in confusion.
The man did not look afraid.
He looked ready.
"Stay behind me," Daniel said firmly.
"Now."
The children obeyed instantly.
The boy pulled the girl close while Daniel lowered his stance, placing his body between them and whatever was approaching.
Every movement was controlled.
Every breath was measured.
The wind moved through the bushes as Daniel watched the shadows carefully.
He did not know who was coming.
He did not know why these children had arrived at his home.
But he knew one thing.
Nobody was getting past him to reach them.
The boy whispered from behind him.
"Are we safe?"
Daniel kept his eyes forward.
"You are safe as long as you stay with me."
The boy looked at him for a moment, searching for any sign that he was lying.
There was none.
Only determination.
Only protection.
The little girl slowly loosened her grip on her brother's hand.
For the first time since arriving, she seemed to believe they might survive the night.
Daniel heard another movement near the entrance gate.
This time it was closer.
He took one step forward.
The stone beneath his boots shifted slightly from the wet ground.
Behind him, the children stayed completely still.
Daniel raised one hand slightly, silently telling them not to move.
His eyes remained locked on the darkness.
He had spent years facing difficult moments, but this felt different.
This was not about himself.
This was about two children who had nowhere else to go.
A figure moved briefly beyond the bushes, but the person never fully stepped into the light.
Daniel could only see a shape.
That was enough.
He knew the danger was real.
The children had been telling the truth without saying a word.
The boy's voice trembled.
"Please don't let them take us."
Those words hit Daniel harder than he expected.
He slowly looked back at the children.
The boy was trying to be brave.
The girl was trying not to cry.
They were both waiting to see whether someone would finally choose them.
Daniel turned back toward the threat.
His jaw tightened.
"Nobody is taking you anywhere."
The silence that followed felt heavier than the storm clouds above the house.
Then the figure moved again.
Daniel reacted immediately.
He stepped forward, blocking the path completely.
His body language changed from defensive to commanding.
He was no longer just protecting the children.
He was claiming the space around them as a boundary nobody could cross.
The boy watched him carefully.
He had seen adults make promises before.
But he had never seen someone stand between him and danger without asking for anything in return.
Daniel kept his voice low.
"Don't move."
The children remained behind him.
"I've got you."
The words were simple.
But to them, they meant everything.
The approaching presence stopped.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The only sounds were the distant wind, the children's quiet breathing, and Daniel's steady footsteps against the stone.
Then Daniel noticed something on the ground near the steps.
A small torn piece of fabric covered in mud.
The boy saw it too.
His face changed instantly.
Daniel looked down at the object.
The child reached forward slightly but stopped himself.
"What is it?" Daniel asked.
The boy swallowed.
"It belongs to my mom."
The answer created a new question.
One that Daniel could feel was much bigger than the moment in front of him.
These children had not just run away from someone.
May you like
They had run away from a story.
A story filled with fear, secrets, and something they were too young to understand.
