Chương 6

They would not go directly to the bookstore.

They would not follow the pattern their enemy expected.

They would use the information they had and wait for the right moment.

Emily explained everything she remembered about Michael's final days.

"He was different near the end."

Daniel looked at her.

"Different how?"

"He became more careful."

She paused.

"He stopped trusting phones."

Daniel looked at his own phone.

"Why?"

"Because he believed they were listening."

Daniel placed the phone on the table.

"Did he tell you anything else?"

Emily thought for a long time.

"He told me something strange."

"What?"

"He said the truth was never hidden in one place."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

She looked frustrated.

"I spent years trying to understand it."

Daniel studied the words she had just spoken.

"The truth was never hidden in one place."

He repeated it quietly.

Emily looked at him.

"What?"

Daniel grabbed the notebook.

"Maybe Michael didn't hide one file."

He began writing.

"Maybe he separated it."

Emily stared at the page.

"Different locations."

"Different people."

"Different pieces."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

Emily's eyes widened slightly.

"Sarah."

They both said the name at the same time.

Michael had trusted Sarah.

If he had divided the information, she might have one piece.

Daniel wrote her name down.

Then he looked at Emily.

"We need to find her before they do."

Emily nodded.

For the first time, she looked less like someone escaping danger and more like someone preparing to face it.

The next morning, hospital security reported something unusual.

A person had entered the building using a visitor badge that did not belong to them.

The badge belonged to a former employee.

Someone who had not worked at the hospital for over a year.

Daniel looked at the report.

"Can you identify him?"

The security officer shook his head.

"The camera footage was damaged."

Emily closed her eyes.

"They planned this."

Daniel looked at her.

"They knew exactly where the cameras were."

The realization made the situation even more serious.

This person had resources.

Access.

Information.

But Daniel noticed something else.

A small detail in the report.

The visitor badge had been activated at 2:17 in the morning.

"Why that time?" he asked.

The security officer shrugged.

"No idea."

Emily looked at the clock.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Because that was when I woke up."

Daniel felt a chill.

The photograph had been taken after that.

Someone had entered the hospital while they were asleep.

Someone had been close enough to see them.

Daniel stood.

"We leave today."

Emily looked at him.

"Are you sure?"

"No."

He looked at her honestly.

"I'm terrified."

A small smile appeared on Emily's face.

"That's the first honest answer you've given me all week."

Daniel smiled slightly.

"But I'm still going."

The doctor helped arrange a safer exit route.

They would leave through a private service entrance away from the main lobby.

Emily wore a simple jacket over her hospital clothes.

She moved slowly, still recovering.

Daniel stayed beside her, supporting her without making her feel helpless.

When they reached the exit, Emily stopped.

She looked back at the hospital room where she had spent the last few days.

That room represented fear.

Pain.

Uncertainty.

But it also represented something else.

The moment she finally stopped running.

Daniel noticed her pause.

"Are you okay?"

Emily nodded.

"Yes."

She looked at him.

"For the first time in a long time, I think I am."

Together, they stepped outside.

The cold air touched their faces.

The city continued around them.

People walked by without knowing the danger hidden beneath an ordinary morning.

Daniel looked at Emily.

Emily looked back at him.

Neither of them knew what waited ahead.

But they knew one thing.

The person hunting them had made a mistake.

They had spent years trying to separate Emily from everyone she trusted.

Now they had created the one thing they feared most.

A partnership they could not break.

The drive across the city was quieter than either of them expected.

Daniel kept both hands on the steering wheel, his eyes constantly moving between the road ahead and the mirrors behind them.

Emily sat in the passenger seat, watching the streets pass by through the window.

For the first time in years, she was not thinking about how to disappear.

She was thinking about how to finally end the fear that had controlled her life.

The bookstore was only a few miles away.

But they were not going there yet.

Daniel had spent the night creating a different approach.

They would first find out if they were being followed.

They would look for patterns.

They would make sure they were not walking directly into a trap.

Emily noticed him checking every intersection.

"You are becoming like Michael."

Daniel glanced at her.

"Is that a good thing?"

She thought about it.

"Michael was careful."

She looked down.

"But he was also alone."

Daniel nodded.

"I'm not him."

A small smile appeared on Emily's face.

"No."

She looked at him.

"You're not."

The simple words meant more than he realized.

Daniel had spent so long feeling like he failed her.

Now he understood that he did not need to become someone else to protect her.

He only needed to be present.

After driving through several streets, Daniel parked several blocks away from the bookstore.

The area looked ordinary.

Small shops.

Quiet sidewalks.

People walking with coffee cups in their hands.

Nothing about the place suggested danger.

But Emily knew better.

Danger did not always announce itself.

Sometimes it looked completely normal.

They remained inside the car for several minutes.

Daniel watched the entrance of the bookstore.

Emily watched him.

"You are waiting for me to tell you not to go."

Daniel looked at her.

"Are you?"

"No."

She took a deep breath.

"I am tired of running."

Those words surprised him.

May you like

Because he knew exactly how much they cost her to say.

Emily had spent years surviving by staying invisible.
