Chương 1

""The first thing Emma felt was the grip around her arm.
Her breath stopped before she could even understand what was happening.
The warm light of the kitchen suddenly felt cold as Margaret stepped closer, her fingers tightening around Emma’s sleeve with a force that carried years of anger and disappointment.
Emma looked down at the hand holding her and then slowly raised her eyes, searching the older woman’s face for any sign of compassion.
There was none.
“Why are you doing this to me?” Emma whispered, her voice shaking as fear replaced the confusion she had carried into the room.
Margaret released a slow breath and kept her expression firm.
“Because you need to hear the truth,” she said.
The words landed harder than the grip itself.
Emma pulled her arm back and moved away, her body lowering instinctively as if she could make herself smaller and disappear from the pain surrounding her.
Her hands rose defensively in front of her chest while her eyes filled with tears she refused to let fall.
For years, she had tried to keep peace in this family.
For years, she had swallowed accusations, ignored whispers, and convinced herself that patience would eventually bring everyone together.
But standing in that kitchen, surrounded by people who were supposed to protect her, she felt more alone than ever.
The stainless steel refrigerator reflected fragments of the scene behind them.
The white cabinets, the dark countertops, and the carefully arranged family photographs on the wall seemed strangely disconnected from the emotional storm unfolding in the center of the room.
Margaret stood tall near the refrigerator, her gray-blonde hair perfectly still, her posture controlled, and her eyes locked on Emma.
She looked like someone who had rehearsed this moment many times.
Emma touched the place where Margaret had grabbed her and winced slightly.
The small movement did not escape Daniel’s attention.
He had been standing near the kitchen counter, watching the argument grow more painful with every second.
His jaw tightened as he looked between his mother and Emma.
He had expected a difficult conversation.
He had not expected to see Emma frightened.
“Stop,” Daniel said, stepping forward.
His voice was not loud, but it carried enough weight to interrupt the tension.
Margaret turned toward him.
Daniel lowered himself slightly, trying to meet Emma at her level rather than standing over her.
“Look at what you’re doing,” he said.
Emma looked at him with uncertainty.
Part of her wanted to trust him.
Another part of her wondered if he would eventually choose his family over her like everyone else had.
Daniel slowly reached out his hand but stopped before touching her.
He knew one wrong movement could make her pull away.
“I’m here,” he said quietly.
Emma looked at his hand and then back at his face.
Her breathing remained uneven.
She wanted to believe him.
She wanted to believe someone in that room saw her as a person instead of a problem.
Margaret crossed her arms.
“You don’t understand what happened,” she said.
Daniel stood up slowly.
“Then explain it,” he replied.
The silence that followed was heavier than shouting.
Margaret looked away for a moment.
That brief hesitation was enough for Emma to notice.
There was something hidden beneath the anger.
Something nobody had said out loud.
The family had always presented itself as perfect.
They hosted elegant dinners, smiled for photographs, and told everyone that they were stronger than any challenge.
But behind closed doors, every person carried secrets.
Daniel had spent years avoiding conflict because he believed staying quiet kept the family together.
He had convinced himself that ignoring problems was the same as solving them.
Now he realized silence had only allowed the damage to grow.
Emma slowly pushed herself upward but remained close to the floor.
Her knees felt weak.
“I never wanted this,” she said.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
Margaret looked at her.
“You never wanted to know what you caused either.”
Emma froze.
Daniel immediately turned toward his mother.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret’s expression changed.
For the first time, her certainty cracked.
She looked older in that moment.
Not softer, but tired.
“I have carried this for too long,” Margaret said.
Emma shook her head.
“You keep saying that, but you never tell me what I did.”
The question hung in the kitchen.
No accusation.
No anger.
Just exhaustion.
Daniel looked at both women and realized he was standing between two people who were both hurt, but only one of them had been allowed to speak.
Before anyone could answer, heavy footsteps echoed from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
Richard appeared at the entrance of the kitchen.
The older man moved quickly, his gray hair slightly disheveled, his dark clothing contrasting with the bright room around him.
He immediately noticed Emma’s position on the floor.
He noticed the fear in her eyes.
He noticed Daniel standing between her and Margaret.
And his expression changed.
Richard had spent most of his life avoiding emotional battles.
He believed family problems should stay private.
He believed time would heal wounds.
But seeing Emma look so vulnerable changed something inside him.
“What happened here?” he asked.
Nobody answered.
Richard looked at Margaret first.
Then he looked at Daniel.
Finally, he looked at Emma.
His face tightened.
“Emma.”
She looked up.
“Are you okay?”
The simple question almost broke her.
Because nobody had asked that yet.
Not really.
She nodded, but the tears finally escaped.
Richard stepped closer.
Daniel moved slightly aside, allowing him space.
Margaret watched silently.
Richard looked at his son.
“What were you doing while this happened?”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
The question hurt because he knew the answer.
He had been watching.
He had been waiting.
He had been hoping someone else would fix everything.
“I should have stopped it sooner,” Daniel admitted.
Richard’s expression remained serious.
“Yes, you should have.”
The words were not angry.
They were disappointed.
May you like
And somehow that felt heavier.
Daniel looked toward Emma.
