Chương 3

For the first time in many years, Emily allowed herself to believe that she did not have to carry every burden alone.

Daniel remained beside her bed through the afternoon, listening as she slowly revealed pieces of a story she had hidden from everyone.

The doctor returned several times to check her condition, but he never interrupted the conversations that seemed more important than any medical report.

Emily knew that telling Daniel the truth would change everything between them.

She knew that once the secrets were spoken aloud, there would be no way to return to the simpler life they had before.

But that life had already disappeared the moment she collapsed.

Daniel sat quietly as she explained what happened after she discovered the information years ago.

She had worked as a financial analyst for a powerful corporation that controlled several companies across the country.

At first, she believed she was helping build something meaningful.

The executives spoke about innovation, progress, and creating opportunities for people.

But over time, Emily noticed unusual transactions hidden behind complicated reports.

She noticed money moving through accounts that did not match official records.

She noticed employees who questioned decisions suddenly losing their jobs.

The more she investigated, the more she realized she had uncovered something dangerous.

"I thought I could expose it and walk away," Emily said.

Her voice became weaker as she continued.

"I thought the truth would be enough."

Daniel listened without interrupting.

"But powerful people don't always fear the truth," she whispered.

"Sometimes they fear the person who knows it."

Daniel looked down at the floor.

He remembered all the times Emily had seemed distant.

He remembered the nights when she stared out the window, lost in thoughts she refused to share.

He remembered asking if something was wrong and hearing her say she was fine.

Now he understood that she had been fighting a battle he never saw.

"Who helped you?" Daniel asked.

Emily looked surprised.

"What do you mean?"

"You couldn't have survived all of this by yourself."

A small sadness appeared in her eyes.

"I didn't."

She paused.

"There was someone who helped me escape."

Daniel waited.

"His name was Michael."

The name immediately changed her expression.

Daniel noticed.

"Something happened to him."

Emily looked away.

"He disappeared."

The room became quiet again.

The doctor glanced toward them but stayed silent.

Daniel felt the weight of every unanswered question.

"When?"

"Three years ago."

Emily swallowed.

"The same week I was supposed to meet with investigators."

Daniel's hands tightened.

"Did they hurt him?"

Emily closed her eyes.

"I don't know."

The uncertainty was worse than any answer.

Daniel looked at the small card on the table.

"Is that why they sent this?"

Emily nodded slowly.

"They wanted me to know they remembered."

A cold feeling moved through Daniel.

"Then why now?"

Emily looked toward the hospital window.

"Because they know I found something else."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What?"

Emily hesitated.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she looked at him with fear.

"A backup file."

Daniel stared at her.

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

Her answer surprised him.

"I hid it before they found me."

Daniel studied her face.

"But someone knows about it."

Emily nodded.

"Someone close to them."

The meaning behind those words unsettled him.

Daniel thought about everyone around them.

Friends.

Coworkers.

People they trusted.

The idea that someone had been watching Emily for years made his stomach tighten.

"We need to tell the police," Daniel said.

Emily immediately looked afraid.

"No."

"Emily, this has gone too far."

"If we go to the wrong person, we could lose our only chance."

Daniel stopped.

He wanted to argue.

He wanted to tell her that they needed help.

But he could see the fear in her eyes.

It was not irrational fear.

It was the fear of someone who had already seen what happened when people trusted the wrong person.

The doctor stepped closer.

"She needs rest."

Daniel nodded.

Emily looked exhausted.

The conversation had taken everything she had.

Daniel carefully adjusted the blanket around her.

"You don't have to tell me everything today."

Emily looked at him.

"I should have told you years ago."

Daniel shook his head.

"I wish you had."

His voice softened.

"But I understand why you didn't."

Emily looked surprised.

"You do?"

"No."

Daniel gave a small painful smile.

"I don't understand how you carried this alone."

He looked directly at her.

"But I understand that you were trying to protect me."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

She turned her face away.

Daniel gently held her hand.

"I was angry because I thought you didn't trust me."

He paused.

"But the truth is you trusted me enough to sacrifice your own happiness."

Emily looked back at him.

"Daniel..."

"I don't want you to do that anymore."

The room remained silent.

For a moment, they were not two people surrounded by fear and secrets.

They were just two people who had spent too long hurting each other without understanding why.

Later that evening, the hospital hallway became quieter.

The lights outside the room dimmed as fewer visitors walked through the corridors.

Daniel sat beside Emily while she slept.

He watched her breathing become steadier.

For the first time since arriving, he allowed himself to close his eyes.

But the peace lasted only a few minutes.

A sound from the hallway made him open them again.

A shadow moved behind the glass window of the door.

Daniel immediately stood.

The figure disappeared before he could see a face.

His heart began beating faster.

He looked back at Emily.

She was still asleep.

He quietly walked toward the door.

The hallway was empty.

Only the sound of distant footsteps remained.

Daniel returned to the room and locked the small drawer beside the bed where the card was stored.

He knew the danger was real now.

This was no longer just about discovering the truth.

It was about protecting the person who had spent years protecting him.
