Chương 5
Daniel leaned forward.
"Why didn't you go?"
Emily looked at him sadly.
"Because I knew they were watching me."
Daniel understood.
She had been trapped.
Every decision had carried a risk.
"What place?" he asked.
Emily whispered the answer.
"A small bookstore on the west side of the city."
Daniel wrote it down.
Then he looked at her.
"We'll go there."
Emily immediately shook her head.
"No."
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
"Because if they are still watching, they will expect me to go there."
He considered her words.
She was right.
They needed to be smarter.
Not faster.
Daniel closed the notebook.
"Then we find another way."
Emily looked at him.
"How?"
Daniel glanced toward the hospital window.
"I don't know yet."
He looked back at her.
"But I know we won't walk into a trap."
That night, Daniel stayed awake beside Emily again.
The hospital was quiet.
The city outside continued moving without knowing what was happening inside that small room.
Emily slept peacefully for the first time in days.
Daniel watched her and thought about everything she had endured.
He thought about the years she spent pretending she was okay.
He thought about every moment when he could have noticed something was wrong.
But regret could not protect her.
Only action could.
Near midnight, Daniel received another message.
This time, there was a photograph attached.
His heart stopped when he opened it.
The image showed the hospital room from outside the door.
Emily was visible through the glass.
Daniel was sitting beside her.
Someone had taken the picture moments earlier.
His hands tightened around the phone.
They were not just watching.
They were inside the hospital.
Daniel stood slowly and looked around the room.
The lights were dim.
The hallway outside was empty.
He immediately moved closer to Emily.
She woke up when she felt his hand touch hers.
"What happened?"
Daniel looked at her.
His face revealed the truth before he spoke.
"They found us."
Emily's eyes widened.
For a moment, fear returned.
Then something stronger replaced it.
Determination.
She slowly sat up despite her weakness.
"Then it's time we find them first."
Daniel looked at the woman in front of him.
The woman who had survived years of fear.
The woman who had nearly lost everything.
And he realized the person lying in that hospital bed was not someone waiting to be saved.
She was someone who had been fighting all along.
Now they were finally fighting together.
The next few hours became a careful balance between fear and preparation.
Daniel knew that rushing out of the hospital would be exactly what their enemy wanted.
They wanted Emily frightened.
They wanted her to make a mistake.
They wanted her to return to the same pattern of running away and hiding.
But this time, Daniel refused to let fear decide their next move.
He contacted no one.
He made no calls.
He did not mention the photograph to anyone at the hospital.
Instead, he studied every detail of the image.
The angle.
The reflection in the glass.
The time it was taken.
The small details most people would ignore.
Emily watched him from the bed.
"You are trying to find a clue."
Daniel looked at her.
"Yes."
"You always do that when you're scared."
He paused.
"Do what?"
"You focus on solving everything because it keeps you from thinking about what could happen."
Daniel looked away.
Emily was right.
For years, he had convinced himself that being strong meant never admitting fear.
But Emily had shown him that fear was not weakness.
Fear was proof that something mattered.
"I am scared," he finally admitted.
Emily looked surprised.
Daniel continued.
"I'm scared because I almost lost you."
Her expression softened.
"I'm scared too."
Those words carried more weight than anything else.
Because Emily was finally admitting she was not made of stone.
She was not someone who could survive anything without breaking.
She was someone who needed someone beside her.
The doctor entered the room again and immediately noticed the tension.
He looked between Daniel and Emily.
"Is something wrong?"
Daniel considered lying.
But Emily spoke first.
"Someone is watching us."
The doctor's expression changed.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel showed him the photograph.
The doctor studied it carefully.
"This was taken from outside the room."
Emily nodded.
"We think someone inside the hospital helped them."
The doctor remained silent for a moment.
Then he closed the door.
"There is something you should know."
Daniel and Emily exchanged a glance.
"What?" Daniel asked.
The doctor looked uncomfortable.
"Yesterday, before you arrived, someone came asking about Emily's condition."
Emily became still.
"What did they look like?"
"A man."
The doctor thought carefully.
"Middle-aged. Expensive suit. Calm behavior."
Daniel immediately understood.
"Did he give a name?"
The doctor shook his head.
"He said he was a family friend."
Emily's face changed.
She knew.
Daniel saw the fear return.
"Who was it?"
Emily looked at him.
"I think it was him."
The doctor looked confused.
"Who?"
Emily whispered the name of the man she had been running from for years.
The same powerful businessman whose secrets she had uncovered.
Daniel felt anger rise again.
But this time, he controlled it.
He looked at the doctor.
"Can you help us keep this quiet?"
The doctor nodded.
"I can ask security to monitor the floor without making it obvious."
Emily looked grateful.
"Thank you."
After the doctor left, Daniel closed the curtains.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
More private.
More dangerous.
Emily stared at the ceiling.
"I never wanted you to be part of this."
Daniel sat beside her.
"I know."
"I wanted you to have a normal life."
Daniel looked at her.
"And you thought pushing me away was the way to give me that."
She nodded slowly.
"I thought if I disappeared, they would lose interest."
Daniel looked down.
"But they didn't."
"No."
Emily's voice became quiet.
"They never stop."
Daniel reached for the notebook.
May you like
"Then neither do we."
That evening, they created a plan.
