Chương 4

The next morning, Emily woke up to find Daniel sitting beside her again.
"You saw someone," she said immediately.
Daniel froze.
"How did you know?"
Her expression turned serious.
"Because they always watch before they act."
Daniel felt a chill.
"Emily, we need a plan."
She nodded slowly.
For the first time, she did not try to push him away.
Together, they began putting the pieces together.
They reviewed old dates.
They remembered names.
They searched through memories that had once seemed meaningless.
And slowly, a pattern began to appear.
Someone had been controlling events around them for years.
Someone had been waiting for the right moment.
But they had made one mistake.
They underestimated how much Daniel loved Emily.
And they underestimated how determined Emily had become after surviving everything they had done to her.
The hospital room was still quiet.
The machines still continued their steady rhythm.
But something had changed.
The fear was still there.
The danger was still there.
Yet for the first time, Emily and Daniel were facing it together.
And together, they were ready to uncover the truth.
The hospital room became their temporary command center as the morning sun slowly replaced the darkness outside.
Daniel sat beside Emily with a notebook on the small table, carefully writing down every detail she could remember.
The doctor had warned them that stress could slow her recovery, but Emily insisted that staying silent was more dangerous.
She knew the people who had threatened her were counting on her fear.
For years, they had relied on her isolation.
They believed that if they removed every person she trusted, she would eventually give up.
They had been wrong.
Daniel watched Emily struggle to sit up, and he immediately adjusted her pillow.
"You don't have to prove anything right now," he said.
Emily looked at him with a tired but determined expression.
"I spent years waiting for the right moment to fight back."
She looked at the notebook between them.
"This is the first time I actually have one."
Daniel understood what she meant.
The difference was not that the danger had disappeared.
The difference was that she was no longer facing it alone.
They started with the smallest details.
Names.
Locations.
Dates.
Every memory Emily had tried to forget.
She told Daniel about the first warning sign.
It happened months after she discovered the hidden financial records.
A message appeared on her computer one morning.
There was no sender.
There was no explanation.
There were only three words.
"Stop looking now."
At the time, Emily thought it was a simple threat from someone trying to scare her.
She continued investigating.
That was when things became worse.
Her apartment was searched while she was away.
Nothing valuable was taken.
Nothing was damaged.
The only thing missing was a folder containing copies of her research.
Daniel looked up from the notebook.
"They knew exactly what they wanted."
Emily nodded.
"That was when I realized this wasn't random."
She looked toward the window.
"Someone had access to information about me."
Daniel felt a growing anger inside him.
Not the kind of anger that made him reckless.
The kind that came from finally understanding how much someone he loved had suffered.
"Why didn't you come to me then?"
Emily looked down.
"Because I was afraid they would come after you."
Daniel took a slow breath.
"Emily, they came after you anyway."
Her eyes filled with regret.
"I know."
The honesty in her voice made the room quiet.
Daniel reached across the bed and held her hand.
"We can't change what happened."
He paused.
"But we can decide what happens next."
Emily squeezed his fingers weakly.
That small movement meant more to him than any apology.
Later that afternoon, the doctor entered the room with updated medical information.
Emily was improving, but he insisted she remain under observation.
Daniel listened carefully while Emily watched him.
She noticed something different about him.
Before the hospital, Daniel had always tried to solve problems immediately.
He was the person who ran toward danger without thinking.
But now he was calmer.
More careful.
He was still determined, but he was no longer letting anger control him.
After the doctor left, Emily smiled faintly.
"You changed."
Daniel looked confused.
"What?"
"You used to think protecting someone meant fighting every battle yourself."
He looked at her.
"And now?"
"Now you understand that sometimes protecting someone means standing beside them."
Daniel smiled slightly.
"I learned from you."
Emily looked away.
"I wish you didn't have to."
"I wish you didn't either."
For a brief moment, the fear surrounding them disappeared.
Then Daniel's phone vibrated.
The sound instantly changed the atmosphere.
He looked at the screen.
The number was unknown.
Emily noticed his expression.
"Don't answer it."
Daniel stared at the phone.
The call continued for several seconds.
Then it stopped.
A message appeared.
Daniel opened it carefully.
There was only one sentence.
"Some secrets should stay buried."
Emily's face lost color.
Daniel immediately turned the phone toward her.
She recognized the message.
"That's how they started before."
Daniel looked at her.
"What happened after the first message?"
Emily swallowed.
"The next day, Michael disappeared."
The room felt colder.
Daniel saved the message and placed the phone down.
He wanted to call someone.
He wanted to demand answers.
But he remembered Emily's warning.
The wrong person could make everything worse.
"Do you know anyone who can help us?" he asked.
Emily thought quietly.
"There is one person."
Daniel waited.
"Her name is Sarah."
"Who is she?"
"She worked with me before."
Emily looked toward the door.
"She was the only person who believed me from the beginning."
Daniel wrote down the name.
"Where is she now?"
Emily hesitated.
"I don't know."
That answer worried him.
"Then how do we find her?"
Emily looked at the notebook.
"Michael left something behind."
Daniel looked up.
"What?"
"A location."
May you like
She closed her eyes, remembering.
"Before he disappeared, he told me that if anything happened, I should go to a place where we used to meet."
