Chương 6

The drive to the lake house began before sunrise.Daniel had barely slept.Every time he closed his eyes, another memory returned. His father standing proudly at family events.Michael laughing beside him when they were younger. His mother quietly watching from across the room.So many moments that had seemed ordinary now carried hidden meanings. The past had become a puzzle, and every piece hurt more than the last.Emma sat in the passenger seat beside him.For the first hour, neither of them spoke.Lily slept in the back seat, wrapped in a blanket, unaware of the full weight of the secrets surrounding her.Daniel kept his eyes on the road.He wanted to be angry at Emma.Part of him believed he had every right to be.She had known about Michael. She had known about the letters. She had known there was a truth waiting somewhere beyond their perfect home. But another part of him remembered the way she looked in the study. Not like someone hiding a victory.Like someone carrying a burden."How long did you know about the lake house?" Daniel finally asked.Emma looked out the window."Three months."He tightened his grip on the steering wheel."And you never thought I deserved to know?""I thought you deserved to know when you were ready."Daniel glanced at her."Who decides that?"Emma looked at him."I was wrong."The answer surprised him. There was no excuse. No attempt to defend herself.Just an admission."I was scared," she continued."Scared of what?""That once you knew everything, you would lose the family you thought you had."Daniel looked back at the road."Maybe I already lost it."Emma lowered her eyes. The words hurt because they were true. They drove the rest of the way in silence. The lake house appeared just after eight in the morning. It was smaller than Daniel remembered. When he was a child, it had seemed enormous.A place filled with endless rooms, hidden corners, and summer adventures. Now the old wooden structure looked tired. The paint had faded. The garden had grown wild. But the memories remained.Daniel parked near the front entrance. For several seconds, nobody moved."This is where everything changed," he whispered.Emma looked at him."What do you mean?"Daniel stared at the house."The last summer Michael was here."Lily woke up slowly in the back seat."Are we there?"Daniel turned around and smiled gently."Yes."She looked at the old house."Is this where Uncle Michael lived?"The question surprised him.Daniel had not realized how much she had heard. He nodded."Yes."Lily smiled faintly."I want to meet him."Daniel felt something tighten in his chest. He wanted that too. They walked toward the house together. The front door was unlocked. That immediately made Daniel stop."Was this supposed to be open?"Emma shook her head."No."Daniel pushed the door slowly. The inside was dark and quiet.Dust covered the furniture, but the room did not feel abandoned.Someone had been there recently.A chair near the fireplace had been moved.A fresh cup sat on the table.Daniel looked at Emma."Someone was here."Emma's expression changed. They stepped inside carefully. The silence felt different now.Not empty.Waiting.Daniel walked through the living room.Every corner held a memory. The old couch where he and Michael used to play games. The fireplace where their father told stories. The window where his mother watched them fishing outside. Then he saw something on the wall.A photograph. Not an old family picture.A recent one.Daniel moved closer. His breath caught. It was Michael.Older.Different.But unmistakably alive. He was standing beside the lake. And beside him was someone else.Daniel looked closer.A woman.A woman he recognized.Emma froze behind him.Daniel slowly turned."Who is she?"Emma stared at the photograph. Her face lost all color."I don't know."Daniel looked at her carefully."Don't lie to me."Emma looked hurt."I'm not."The door behind them suddenly creaked.Everyone turned.A man stood in the doorway.Older than Daniel remembered. His hair had turned gray. His face showed years of exhaustion. But his eyes were exactly the same.Daniel stopped breathing. The room became completely silent."Michael."The name came out before he could think. The man stared at him.For a moment, neither brother moved. Then Michael slowly stepped forward."I wondered how long it would take."Daniel felt anger, relief, and confusion collide inside him."You were alive."Michael looked down."Yes.""All these years?"Michael nodded.Daniel wanted to ask a hundred questions. Why did you leave? Why didn't you call? Why did everyone lie?But the only thing he could say was the one thing that hurt the most."Why didn't you come home?"Michael looked at him.Because behind the anger in Daniel's voice was a wounded child who had spent years believing his brother abandoned him."I tried."Daniel shook his head."No.""I did."Michael's voice became emotional."More than once."Emma watched silently.Lily stood close to Daniel, holding his hand.Michael noticed her.His expression changed."Is that your daughter?"Daniel nodded."Yes."Michael looked at Lily with a sad smile."She's beautiful."Lily looked at him carefully."Are you really my uncle?"Michael smiled."Yes."She studied his face."You look like my dad."The words affected him deeply.Michael looked away for a moment."I know."Daniel stepped closer."What happened?"Michael looked toward the old room behind him."The truth is bigger than what you were told."Daniel's jaw tightened."Then tell me."Michael nodded slowly."I will."He walked toward the fireplace."Your father didn't just hide financial problems."Daniel waited."He hid the reason they happened."The room became quiet."What reason?"Michael looked at him."Because he was trying to protect someone."Daniel felt a familiar frustration.Again.Another secret.Another person making choices for him."Who?"Michael's expression became serious."Me."Daniel stared at him."I don't understand."Michael took a deep breath."Your father took the blame for something I did."Daniel looked confused."Something you did?"Michael nodded."But he also made a choice that destroyed our family."Daniel stepped closer."What choice?"Michael looked at the photograph on the wall."The choice to protect a lie instead of protecting the people he loved."Outside, the lake remained completely still.Inside the old house, two brothers finally stood face to face after years apart. And for the first time, the truth was no longer hidden in letters or locked drawers. It was standing right in front of Daniel.
Daniel stared at his brother, waiting for the explanation that had taken years to arrive.
Michael looked older than the man he remembered.
There were lines on his face that spoke about struggles Daniel never knew existed.
But behind those changes were the same eyes.
The same eyes that had once watched over him when they were children.
"What did you do?" Daniel finally asked.
Michael looked down.
"I made a mistake."
The honesty surprised Daniel.
