Chương 5

Daniel stared at the page.

His father had always been known as a successful businessman.

A man who never failed.

A man who always had control.

But maybe that image had been another carefully built illusion.

"Michael wanted to expose the truth," Emma said softly.

Daniel looked at her.

"And my father stopped him."

Emma nodded.

"Yes."

The room felt smaller.

The perfect family image.

The perfect home.

The perfect life.

Everything was connected to one decision.

A decision to hide.

A decision to protect appearances instead of people.

Lily stepped closer.

"Is Michael coming back?"

The question surprised both adults.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

He did not know how to answer.

Because for the first time in years, he wanted the answer to be yes.

Emma looked at the photograph.

"I don't know."

Daniel folded the letter carefully.

But something had changed.

The anger was still there.

The betrayal was still there.

But underneath it was something stronger.

A need to find the person who had been missing from his family for so long.

He looked at Emma.

"How long have you known he might still be alive?"

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"Daniel."

"How long?"

She looked away.

"Three months."

The answer hit him harder than anything else.

Three months.

She had known for three months.

And she had said nothing.

Daniel slowly stepped back.

The woman standing in front of him was someone he loved.

Someone he trusted.

But she was also someone who had chosen silence.

"Where is he?"

Emma looked at him.

"I don't know."

Daniel stared at her.

"Then who does?"

Emma's silence returned.

And this time, Daniel already knew the answer.

Someone else was still holding the final piece of the truth.

Daniel looked at Emma, waiting for the answer she seemed unwilling to give. The silence between them carried more weight than any confession."Who knows where he is?" Daniel asked again.Emma took a slow breath."Your mother."Daniel felt his expression change."My mother is the person holding the final piece?"Emma nodded."She knows more than anyone."Daniel looked down at the letter in his hand. His mother's handwriting. His mother's words. His mother's secret.A woman who had spent his entire life protecting him had also been protecting something from him."I need to call her."Emma looked uncertain."Daniel.""No."His voice was calm, but there was no hesitation."I need to hear this from her."He took out his phone.Lily watched him carefully. She could feel the tension even though she did not understand all the details.Daniel noticed her expression and softened."Everything is going to be okay."It was the same thing adults always said when things were not okay. But he needed her to believe it.He needed to believe it too.The phone rang.Once.Twice.Three times. Then a familiar voice answered."Daniel?"His mother's voice immediately made something inside him hurt.Because suddenly he was not a grown man standing in a mansion. He was a child again.A child who trusted his parents completely."Mom."She became quiet."What happened?"Daniel looked at Emma. Then at the photograph. Then at Lily."I found the study."The silence on the other end told him everything. His mother knew exactly what he meant."You found it," she whispered.Daniel closed his eyes."You knew I would.""I hoped you wouldn't have to."The answer shocked him."Mom, why?"His voice cracked slightly."Why did everyone decide I couldn't handle the truth?"His mother was silent."Because we were afraid."Daniel walked toward the window."Afraid of what?""Of losing you."He looked back at Emma."Everyone says that."His mother sighed."Because it is true."Daniel felt anger rising again."Then why did nobody ask me what I wanted?"There was pain in his mother's voice."Because your father made us believe silence was protection."Daniel looked at the photograph."And Michael?"The line became completely silent. His mother did not ask who.She did not need to."Is he alive?"A long pause followed. Then his mother's voice became quiet."Yes."Daniel closed his eyes. The answer he had hoped for and feared at the same time was finally real.Michael was alive. His brother was alive. All these years, while Daniel believed he had been abandoned, Michael had been somewhere in the world.Living with a secret.Living without his family."Where is he?""I don't know."Daniel opened his eyes."Mom.""I don't."Her voice trembled."The last time I saw him was years ago.""Then how do you know he is alive?"His mother hesitated."Because he sent me something.""What?""A letter."Daniel looked at Emma."Another letter."His mother was quiet."Yes.""Why didn't you tell me?""Because he asked me not to."Daniel felt his frustration return."Everyone keeps making choices for me."His mother started crying softly."I know."The sound affected him more than he expected. He had spent years being angry at his father. But he had never imagined hearing his mother break down."Mom, why did Michael leave?"She took a breath."Because he believed your father would destroy him if he stayed."Daniel looked at the floor."Destroy him?""Your father was desperate.""For what?""To keep everything hidden."Daniel's fingers tightened around the phone."What exactly was he hiding?"His mother did not answer immediately. When she finally spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper."The company."Daniel frowned."The company?""Your father built his reputation on success."She paused."But years before you knew anything, the business started failing."Daniel remembered the expensive cars. The large house. The constant image of wealth. His father had always acted like nothing could touch him."He lied?""Yes."The word was painful."To everyone."Daniel looked at Emma."Why?""Because he believed losing the company meant losing his family."Daniel shook his head."And Michael found out.""Yes.""What did he do?"His mother answered quietly."He tried to save us."Daniel looked at the photograph again. The brother he thought had betrayed him had actually been fighting for them."Then why did my father blame him?"His mother's voice became heavier."Because admitting Michael was right would mean admitting he was wrong."Daniel understood. His father had not just been protecting money. He had been protecting his identity. The image of himself as a powerful man who never failed.A man who controlled everything."When did you last hear from Michael?" Daniel asked."Six months ago."Daniel froze."Six months?""Yes.""What did he say?"His mother hesitated."He said he was finally ready.""Ready for what?""To come home."Daniel looked toward the open study door. The answer created a new feeling.Hope.Small.Fragile.But real."Where can I find him?""I don't know."Daniel closed his eyes.Another missing piece.Another secret. But then his mother continued."There is something else."He opened his eyes."What?""Your father left something behind."Daniel looked at Emma."A document?""No."His mother's voice became serious."An address."The room went still."An address to where?"His mother whispered the location.Daniel immediately recognized it.A place his father had owned years ago.A place nobody in the family had mentioned since he was a child."The lake house?""Yes."Daniel remembered the old property. The place where his family used to spend summers before everything changed. The place where Michael had taught him how to fish. The place where they had been brothers."What is there?"His mother hesitated."I don't know."Daniel looked at the letter. At the photograph. At everything hidden away."Mom.""I think Michael left the final answers there."Daniel felt the weight of the night settle over him.The broken dinner. The hidden study. The letters. The missing brother. All roads seemed to lead to the same place. The past.Emma stepped closer."Daniel."He ended the call slowly. For a moment, nobody spoke. Then Lily quietly asked."Are we going somewhere?"Daniel looked at her.He wanted to say no.He wanted to protect her from the complicated world adults created. But he also knew something now.Secrets did not disappear because people ignored them. They only grew."Yes," he said softly."We are."Emma looked surprised."We?"Daniel looked at her.Despite everything, she was still part of this. She was still the person who had stood beside him through years of his life. But trust had changed. It was no longer something he could give without question."It is time we find the truth."Emma nodded slowly. And for the first time that night, nobody tried to stop him.Because everyone finally understood the same thing. The truth had already found them. Now they had to face where it would lead.
