Chương 4

The sound felt louder than it should have.

Nobody spoke as the door slowly opened.

The room beyond was dark except for the faint light from the hallway.

Dust covered parts of the furniture, but everything inside had been carefully arranged.

It did not look abandoned.

It looked preserved.

Like someone had been waiting for a moment that never came.

Daniel stepped inside first.

Emma followed behind him.

Lily stayed close, holding onto the edge of Daniel's shirt.

The air inside the room felt different.

It carried the feeling of old memories.

Old arguments.

Old pain.

Daniel looked around slowly.

The desk near the window was exactly where it had always been.

The shelves were filled with family books and photographs.

His father's collection of watches remained in the glass cabinet.

Everything looked normal.

That was what made it unsettling.

A hidden truth was not supposed to exist in a room that looked so ordinary.

"Where is the picture?" Daniel asked.

Lily pointed toward the wooden cabinet beside the desk.

"The drawer at the bottom."

Daniel walked toward it.

Emma followed carefully.

"Daniel."

He stopped.

Her voice made him turn around.

"What?"

She looked nervous.

"I need you to understand something before you open it."

He waited.

"I never wanted to hurt you."

Daniel stared at her.

"Then why did you hide this?"

Emma looked down.

"Because your father was right about one thing."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"My father was right?"

"He was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

Emma looked toward the drawer.

"Of losing control."

Daniel remained silent.

"Your father built his entire life around controlling what people knew and what people believed."

She paused.

"When something threatened that image, he tried to remove it."

Daniel looked back at the drawer.

"And Michael threatened that image."

Emma nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel opened the drawer.

Inside were several old photographs, envelopes, and documents.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing that immediately revealed a secret.

But then he saw it.

A photograph lying underneath a stack of papers.

He picked it up.

His fingers tightened around the edges.

The image showed three people standing outside an older house.

His mother.

His father.

And a young man standing beside them.

Daniel's heart stopped for a moment.

Because the young man looked almost exactly like him.

Not just similar.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same shape of his face.

But Daniel knew that person was not him.

"This is Michael."

His voice was barely audible.

Emma nodded.

Daniel turned the picture over.

There was writing on the back.

A date.

A location.

And a sentence written by his mother.

"I hope one day they both know the truth."

Daniel felt a cold feeling move through him.

"Both?"

Emma looked away.

"Yes."

Daniel looked at her.

"Who is the other person?"

Emma did not answer.

The silence was enough.

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then back at Emma.

"Who else doesn't know the truth?"

Emma walked closer.

"There is something I should have told you years ago."

He waited.

"When your father came to see me, he wasn't just asking me to stay away from you."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"What else?"

"He was warning me."

"About Michael?"

Emma nodded.

"But also about you."

Daniel froze.

"Me?"

"He believed that if you ever learned the truth, you would search for answers."

Daniel looked confused.

"And why was that a problem?"

Emma's voice became quiet.

"Because the truth would destroy the version of your family he spent his entire life creating."

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"What truth?"

Emma took a deep breath.

"Michael did not leave because he betrayed your family."

Daniel waited.

"He left because he discovered something your father did."

The room became silent again.

"What did he discover?"

Emma looked toward the documents.

"I don't know everything."

Daniel shook his head.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"I know."

Her eyes filled with regret.

"But I know enough."

She picked up an envelope from the drawer.

"This was found after your father died."

Daniel looked at it.

"Why didn't you give it to me?"

Emma hesitated.

"Because your mother asked me not to."

Daniel felt another shock.

"My mother?"

"She said you needed time."

"Time for what?"

"To build a life outside your father's shadow."

Daniel laughed quietly.

"A life built on lies."

Emma did not argue.

Because she knew the pain behind his words.

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was older and weaker than the note he had found earlier.

It was from his mother.

Daniel began reading.

"My dear Daniel."

His breathing changed.

The first sentence already made his chest tighten.

"If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you."

He continued.

"I wanted to tell you everything, but every time I tried, I remembered the fear in your father's eyes."

Daniel stopped.

His father had always seemed powerful.

Unbreakable.

But this letter described someone different.

Someone afraid.

"Your father made mistakes."

Daniel kept reading.

"Some mistakes were caused by pride.

Some were caused by fear.

But the biggest mistake was believing he could protect this family by hiding the truth."

Daniel's hand shook slightly.

Emma watched silently.

The letter continued.

"Michael was never your enemy."

Daniel closed his eyes.

A lifetime of believing his brother had abandoned them suddenly disappeared.

"He was trying to protect someone."

Daniel looked up.

"Who?"

Emma shook her head.

"I don't know."

He looked back at the letter.

The next line answered the question.

"He was trying to protect Daniel."

Daniel felt his breath leave him.

The words seemed impossible.

His own brother had disappeared to protect him.

Not because he hated him.

Not because he abandoned him.

Because he cared.

"Why?" Daniel whispered.

Emma looked at him.

Daniel continued.

"Your brother found documents showing that your father had been hiding financial problems from the family."

Daniel frowned.

Financial problems?

That was not what he expected.

May you like

But the letter continued.

"He discovered that your father had made decisions that put everything at risk."
