Chương 4

Mrs. Carter looked at Emma.

Then at him.

"It was meant for you."

His fingers tightened around the paper.

"Why didn't I receive it?"

Nobody answered.

That silence was the answer.

Daniel opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The paper had been folded many times.

His hands trembled slightly as he began reading.

Clara watched his expression change line by line.

At first there was confusion.

Then shock.

Then pain.

"What does it say?" Melissa asked.

Daniel looked up.

His eyes were different now.

"It says she didn't leave me."

Melissa stopped moving.

"Daniel."

"It says she was trying to come back."

The blonde woman shook her head.

"That is impossible."

Daniel looked at her.

"Why?"

Melissa had no answer.

The question stayed between them.

Clara noticed Daniel's breathing become heavier.

He looked down at the letter again.

"She wrote that someone was watching her."

Emma whispered.

"My mommy was scared."

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel immediately moved closer.

"What did you say?"

The girl held the white cloth against her chest.

"She used to check the windows at night."

Daniel's face tightened.

"Why didn't you tell me this?"

Emma looked down.

"I tried."

The guilt in his expression was painful to see.

Clara knew that moment would stay with him forever.

The moment he realized his daughter had been carrying memories that should never have belonged to a child.

Mrs. Carter opened another document.

"There is more."

Daniel looked at her.

"What else?"

"Your wife left evidence."

Melissa's eyes widened.

"Enough."

Her voice was sharper now.

Everyone turned toward her.

For the first time, her calm appearance was completely gone.

Daniel noticed.

"What evidence?"

Melissa did not answer.

She looked at the door.

Then back at the table.

Clara stepped slightly closer to Emma.

Something about Melissa's reaction confirmed what everyone was thinking.

She was afraid.

Daniel walked toward the hallway.

"The office drawer."

Melissa froze.

"What?"

Emma's voice had been barely audible.

But Daniel remembered.

"You said you saw her hide something."

The girl nodded slowly.

Daniel looked toward the office door.

"I am going to look."

Melissa stepped in front of him.

"No."

The single word stopped everyone.

Daniel stared at her.

"Move."

Her expression changed.

Not into anger.

Into panic.

"You do not understand what you are doing."

Daniel looked at the woman he had trusted for years.

"Then explain it."

Melissa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Clara watched as the truth finally began forcing its way into the open.

Daniel walked past her.

The office door was only a few steps away.

Every person in the room followed with their eyes.

The beautiful house.

The expensive furniture.

The perfect image.

All of it suddenly felt fragile.

Like a carefully built wall about to collapse.

Daniel opened the office door.

Inside was a quiet room with dark wooden shelves, family photographs, and a large desk near the window.

He walked toward the drawer Emma had mentioned.

Melissa remained in the living room.

She did not follow.

She did not argue.

She only watched.

That frightened Clara more than anything else.

Daniel reached the drawer.

He pulled it open.

At first, he saw nothing unusual.

Then he moved aside a stack of papers.

A small hidden compartment appeared underneath.

His face went still.

"What is it?" Clara asked softly.

Daniel did not answer.

He reached inside and pulled out a thin black box.

The room became completely silent.

He opened it slowly.

Inside was a necklace.

A phone.

And a photograph.

Daniel picked up the photograph first.

His hand immediately began shaking.

Because the woman standing beside Emma's mother in the picture was someone he knew.

Someone who had been standing in his home moments ago.

Someone who had spent years telling him she was protecting his family.

Daniel looked back toward Melissa.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"Why do you have this?"

Melissa did not move.

And for the first time, she looked like she had no story left to tell.

Melissa stood completely still.

For several seconds, nobody in the room moved.

Daniel remained in the office doorway holding the photograph in one hand and the black box in the other.

His expression was not filled with rage.

That would have been easier.

Instead, he looked like someone who had just watched his entire understanding of his own life collapse.

"Why do you have this?" he asked again.

Melissa looked at the floor.

That small movement was enough.

Daniel already knew there was a truth she had never intended to reveal.

Clara watched Emma carefully.

The little girl had moved closer to the sofa, still holding the white cloth against her chest.

She was watching the adults, but this time she was not afraid.

She was waiting.

Waiting for someone to finally tell the truth.

Melissa took a slow breath.

"Daniel, there are things you don't understand."

He stared at her.

"Then help me understand."

His voice became colder.

"Start with why you have a photograph of my wife and another woman hidden in my office."

Melissa looked toward Mrs. Carter.

Then toward Clara.

Then back at Daniel.

"You brought them here."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

He held up the photograph.

"You did this."

The accusation changed something in Melissa.

The defensive expression disappeared.

For the first time, she looked tired.

"I was trying to protect this family."

Clara immediately recognized those words.

They were the words people used when they wanted to excuse choices that hurt others.

Daniel heard them too.

"Protect us from what?"

Melissa did not answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

"From the truth?"

The silence was unbearable.

Mrs. Carter looked down.

She seemed disappointed, but not surprised.

"You should have told him years ago," she said.

Melissa closed her eyes.

"I thought I could fix it."

Daniel laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

"Fix what?"

May you like

Melissa looked at Emma.

And the girl's frightened expression seemed to finally break through whatever wall Melissa had built.
