Chương 6
His voice dropped.
"I am angry because my daughter was living with one."
Michael placed a folder on the coffee table.
"I kept copies of everything."
Clara looked at the folder.
"You knew this could happen?"
Michael nodded.
"I knew someone would eventually find the truth."
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside were reports, photographs, and notes from years of investigation.
His eyes moved quickly over the pages.
Then he stopped.
A name appeared repeatedly.
Victor Lang.
Daniel's face changed.
"Who is this?"
Michael answered carefully.
"He was connected to the financial records Sarah discovered."
Melissa looked away.
Daniel noticed.
"You know him."
Melissa did not respond.
"Melissa."
She closed her eyes.
"Yes."
The answer was barely audible.
Daniel looked at her in disbelief.
"How?"
Melissa sat down slowly.
Like her strength had disappeared.
"Before I came into this family, I worked with him."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"You never told me."
"I was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
Melissa looked toward Emma.
"That he would come after her."
The little girl's face changed.
Clara immediately moved closer to her.
Daniel noticed the fear in Emma's eyes.
He looked back at Melissa.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Melissa wiped a tear from her face.
"Because Sarah was already gone."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
His voice became sharper.
"You don't get to use that as an excuse."
Melissa looked down.
"I thought if I stayed quiet, I could keep Emma safe."
Clara stepped forward.
"But you also kept her from knowing the truth."
Melissa looked at her.
"I thought children needed protection from painful things."
Clara's expression softened slightly.
"Children need honesty more than secrets."
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew she was right.
Daniel picked up another document.
"What happened the night Sarah disappeared?"
Michael looked at him.
"She was supposed to meet me."
Daniel looked up.
"You?"
Michael nodded.
"She had evidence."
"What evidence?"
"Proof that Victor Lang had been moving money through several companies connected to yours."
Daniel looked confused.
"But why would he do that?"
Michael hesitated.
"Because your company was a perfect cover."
Daniel looked at the papers again.
The more he read, the more the pieces connected.
The hidden accounts.
The missing documents.
The years of unanswered questions.
All of it had been happening while he believed he was simply dealing with a tragic loss.
Emma quietly spoke.
"Is Mommy coming back?"
The question stopped everyone.
Daniel looked at his daughter.
He wanted to give her an answer that would make everything better.
But he had learned enough to know that false comfort was another kind of betrayal.
"I don't know, sweetheart."
Emma's eyes lowered.
"But I am going to find out."
She looked at him.
"Promise?"
Daniel knelt beside her.
"I promise."
Clara watched the moment quietly.
The promise was not only for Emma.
It was also for the woman whose voice had been trapped inside an old phone for years.
Michael looked at Daniel.
"There is one more thing."
Daniel stood.
"What?"
Michael reached into his folder and pulled out a small memory card.
"Sarah sent this to me the night she disappeared."
Daniel stared at it.
"Why didn't you show me?"
Michael looked ashamed.
"Because I never received it."
He looked at Melissa.
"I found it hidden in my office months later."
Melissa immediately stood.
"I don't know anything about that."
Michael did not argue.
He simply looked at Daniel.
"Watch it."
Daniel inserted the memory card into the laptop on the desk.
Everyone gathered around.
The screen flickered.
Then Sarah appeared again.
This time she looked more frightened.
She was sitting inside a car.
The lighting was dark.
"Daniel, if you are seeing this, I need you to know something."
Her voice trembled.
"Emma is not the reason I left."
Daniel closed his eyes.
A tear moved down his cheek.
Sarah continued.
"I need you to trust your instincts."
She looked directly into the camera.
"The person helping you may not be the person you think."
The video glitched.
Then Sarah whispered something that made Daniel freeze.
"Do not trust Melissa."
Nobody moved.
The recording ended.
The silence afterward felt unbearable.
Melissa covered her mouth.
"No."
Daniel looked at her.
"Explain."
She shook her head.
"She was wrong."
Daniel stared at her.
"Was she?"
Melissa looked desperate.
"Yes."
Michael stepped closer.
"There is more."
He pointed toward the screen.
"Sarah recorded this after she realized someone had access to her accounts."
Daniel looked at Melissa.
"Your accounts?"
Melissa looked away.
"She thought I was involved."
"Were you?"
The question hung in the air.
Melissa's eyes filled with tears.
"I helped her."
Daniel looked surprised.
"What?"
"I helped Sarah collect information."
She took a breath.
"Then Victor found out."
The room became silent again.
"Why didn't you tell me that?"
Melissa looked at him.
"Because Victor threatened Emma."
Daniel's face went pale.
"He threatened my daughter?"
Melissa nodded.
"He said if I told you, he would make sure you lost her forever."
Clara felt Emma move closer to her.
She placed an arm around the girl.
Daniel looked toward his daughter.
Then back at Melissa.
For the first time, he saw something other than guilt in her face.
He saw fear.
Real fear.
But fear did not erase the damage.
"You should have trusted me."
Melissa started crying.
"I was trying to protect her."
Daniel shook his head.
"You made her live inside a lie."
Melissa had no answer.
Outside, the sunlight had faded completely.
The bright living room that once represented comfort now held years of hidden pain.
But for the first time, the truth was no longer trapped.
Michael closed the folder.
"There is still one question."
Daniel looked at him.
"What?"
Michael's voice became serious.
"If Victor knew Sarah had evidence, why did he let Emma stay alive?"
Nobody spoke.
The question changed the atmosphere.
Clara looked at Emma.
Daniel slowly turned toward his daughter.
Michael continued.
May you like
"Because I think Sarah may have hidden something much bigger before she disappeared."
Daniel looked at the old phone.
