Chương 5

"The night Sarah disappeared," Melissa whispered.

Daniel froze.

He had not heard his wife's name spoken that way in years.

Not with fear.

Not with sadness.

"Sarah didn't leave because she wanted to."

Melissa's voice became quieter.

"She was trying to expose someone."

Daniel's grip tightened around the black box.

"Who?"

Melissa looked away.

Clara felt the entire room holding its breath.

"She thought someone was using your company to hide illegal financial records."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that have to do with Emma?"

Melissa looked at him.

"Everything."

The answer made his face change.

Emma slowly looked up.

Daniel noticed.

He immediately softened his voice.

"Sweetheart, go sit with Clara for a minute."

Emma hesitated.

Then she nodded.

Clara guided her toward the sofa.

She stayed close enough that the child could see her.

Daniel returned his attention to Melissa.

"Explain."

Melissa looked at the floor.

"Sarah found out that someone had been moving money through accounts connected to your business."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

The answer came too quickly.

Clara noticed.

Daniel noticed too.

"You do know."

Melissa shook her head.

"No."

"Then why do you look scared?"

Melissa had no response.

Daniel opened the black box again.

He pulled out the old phone.

"The phone."

Mrs. Carter stepped closer.

"That may be what Sarah used."

Daniel looked at her.

"Does it still work?"

She nodded.

"She told me she saved everything there."

Melissa's face changed instantly.

A flash of fear crossed her eyes.

Only for a second.

But Daniel saw it.

He turned the phone over in his hand.

"You know what is on this."

Melissa looked away.

"I know what Sarah believed was on it."

Daniel walked toward the kitchen counter and plugged in the charger he found nearby.

Everyone waited.

The old device took several seconds before the screen finally lit up.

A password appeared.

Daniel stared at it.

"Do you know it?"

Mrs. Carter shook her head.

"No."

Emma quietly spoke from the sofa.

"Mommy used my birthday."

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

"You remember?"

Emma nodded.

"She said it was the one thing nobody could take away."

Daniel entered the numbers slowly.

The screen unlocked.

The room became silent.

Hundreds of old messages appeared.

Photos.

Recordings.

Documents.

A hidden life Sarah had been forced to keep away from him.

Daniel opened the first video.

The image was shaky.

Sarah appeared on the screen.

She looked tired.

Scared.

But alive.

Daniel stopped breathing.

He had not seen her face like that in years.

"Daniel," Sarah said in the recording.

"If you are watching this, something happened and I couldn't get back to you."

Daniel covered his mouth.

Emma stared at the screen.

Her mother's voice filled the living room.

"I need you to listen carefully."

Sarah looked over her shoulder before continuing.

"Someone close to us knows what I found."

The video paused for a moment.

Then Sarah continued.

"I don't know who I can trust."

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

Clara looked away, giving him a moment.

Sarah's voice continued.

"Please protect Emma."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

The pain in Daniel's face was impossible to hide.

For years, he had believed the woman he loved had abandoned him.

For years, he had allowed himself to believe a story that was never complete.

Emma slowly walked closer.

"Daddy?"

Daniel turned.

The little girl stood beside him.

"Did Mommy leave because of me?"

The question shattered him.

He immediately dropped to his knees.

"No."

His voice broke.

"Never."

He held her hands carefully.

"Your mom loved you more than anything."

Emma looked at the phone.

"Then why didn't she come back?"

Daniel had no answer.

Not yet.

But Clara saw something change in him.

The confusion was becoming determination.

He was no longer searching for a way to explain the past.

He was preparing to uncover it.

Melissa watched the father and daughter from across the room.

Her face showed guilt now.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Guilt.

Daniel stood slowly.

He looked at the phone.

Then at Melissa.

"You knew."

Melissa shook her head.

"I knew Sarah was looking into something."

"You knew she was afraid."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

Melissa's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I thought I could handle it."

Daniel stared at her.

"And my daughter?"

Melissa looked down.

"I thought keeping everything quiet would keep her safe."

Clara stepped forward.

"Silence did not keep her safe."

Melissa looked at her.

"No."

Clara's voice remained calm.

"It made her feel alone."

Those words hit harder than any accusation.

Melissa looked at Emma.

The child did not look angry.

She looked hurt.

And that seemed to hurt Melissa even more.

The front door suddenly opened.

A man in a dark suit entered the house.

He stopped when he saw the tension.

"Daniel."

Everyone turned.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

It was the private investigator he had hired years ago to find Sarah.

The man looked at the phone in Daniel's hand.

Then at the photograph.

His expression changed.

"You found it."

Daniel stared at him.

"What do you mean?"

The investigator closed the door behind him.

"Because I have been trying to find this evidence for three years."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

The investigator looked toward Melissa.

And his next words changed everything.

"Because someone paid me to stop looking."

The room became completely still after those words.

Daniel stared at the investigator as if he had heard something impossible.

"Someone paid you to stop looking for my wife?"

The investigator, Michael Reed, slowly nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who?"

Michael looked uncomfortable.

"I was never able to prove it."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"That was not my question."

Michael glanced at Melissa.

The movement was small, but everyone saw it.

Melissa immediately shook her head.

"No."

Her voice was quiet.

"Don't do this."

Daniel turned toward her.

"Do what?"

"Destroy everything because you are angry."

Daniel looked at Emma.

May you like

Then back at Melissa.

"I am not angry because I found a secret."
