Chương 8

Because they knew.
They had both done exactly that.
“You both lied to me.”
Michael nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Vanessa whispered.
“Yes.”
Daniel placed the letter on the table.
“I want the truth.”
Michael looked at him.
“You have to be careful.”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“I have been careful.”
He pointed upstairs.
“My daughter was sitting in a bathroom terrified because everyone around her was hiding something.”
His voice became quieter.
“I am done being careful in the way everyone else wants me to be.”
Michael looked down.
“I understand.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You understand now because you are finally afraid that I know.”
The words hit harder because they were true.
Michael had no response.
Daniel walked toward the stairs.
He stopped halfway.
“Sophie.”
The little girl appeared at the top step.
She had been listening.
Daniel immediately softened.
“How long have you been there?”
Sophie looked guilty.
“Not long.”
Daniel sighed gently.
He walked upstairs and knelt in front of her.
“You should not listen to grown-up conversations.”
“I know.”
“But I know why you did.”
Sophie looked at the floor.
“Are you going to leave again?”
Daniel froze.
The question hurt more than anything else that day.
“What do you mean?”
“Mom left.”
Her small voice became quieter.
“And everyone keeps leaving.”
Daniel pulled her into his arms.
“No.”
He held her tightly.
“I am not leaving.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
Sophie held onto him.
“Mom said you were the strongest person she knew.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
He wished he felt strong.
Right now he felt like someone had taken the foundation beneath his feet.
But for Sophie, he would stand.
He always would.
“I need you to do something for me.”
“What?”
“Do you remember the place where Mom kept special things?”
Sophie nodded slowly.
“The blue box?”
Daniel looked at Michael.
Michael’s expression changed.
“You know it?”
Sophie looked confused.
“What?”
“The blue box,” Daniel repeated.
Sophie nodded.
“Mom said it was our secret memory box.”
Daniel felt his heart race.
“Where is it?”
Sophie pointed toward her room.
“Under my bed.”
Daniel stood.
Michael moved closer.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“If that is where she hid something, do not open it here.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because if someone has been watching this house, we do not know what they know.”
Daniel looked around.
The house suddenly felt different again.
Every shadow.
Every sound.
Every closed door.
Everything felt like a place where secrets could hide.
He went into Sophie’s room carefully.
Sophie followed behind him.
The room was exactly as it had always been.
Stuffed animals.
Children’s books.
Drawings taped to the wall.
A place that should have been untouched by fear.
Daniel knelt and reached beneath the bed.
His fingers touched a small wooden box.
Blue paint covered the surface.
There were tiny flowers Sophie had painted years earlier.
He pulled it out.
Sophie smiled faintly.
“Mom helped me paint it.”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“She would have loved this.”
He opened the box.
Inside were ordinary things.
A bracelet.
A photograph.
A small toy.
A birthday card.
Then he saw something else.
An envelope.
His wife’s handwriting was on it.
Daniel’s hands became still.
Sophie looked up.
“Is that another message?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Michael stood at the doorway.
He looked serious.
“Do you want me here?”
Daniel looked at him.
A part of him wanted to say no.
A part of him wanted everyone away.
But another part knew he needed answers.
“Stay.”
Michael nodded.
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a small flash drive.
And a note.
This contains the truth.
But the truth is dangerous if the wrong person finds it.
Daniel stared at the words.
Below them was another sentence.
Trust the person who chooses Sophie over themselves.
Daniel looked at Michael.
Then Vanessa.
Neither spoke.
Because they both understood the meaning.
This was not just about money anymore.
It was about loyalty.
About choices.
About who would protect Sophie when there was a price to pay.
Daniel held the flash drive tightly.
“We need to find out what is on this.”
Michael nodded.
“Yes.”
Before anyone could move, Daniel’s phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
He opened it.
The words were short.
Stop looking for answers.
Daniel’s face changed.
Michael immediately noticed.
“What is it?”
Daniel turned the phone around.
Vanessa stepped closer.
Her expression changed when she saw the message.
Sophie looked up at her father.
“Dad?”
Daniel put the phone away.
He forced himself to stay calm.
“It is okay.”
But he knew it was not.
Someone knew.
Someone was watching.
Someone had realized the truth was no longer hidden.
And now Daniel understood his wife’s final warning.
The danger was never just discovering the secret.
The danger was what someone would do to keep it buried.
Daniel looked at the message one more time before locking his phone.
He did not show fear.
Not because he was not afraid.
He was afraid.
He was afraid of losing his daughter.
He was afraid that the people closest to him had hidden the truth for years.
He was afraid that his wife had faced something dangerous without him.
But fear was no longer going to decide what happened next.
He had spent too much time allowing other people to protect him from the truth.
Now he needed to protect Sophie.
And he needed to protect the memory of the woman who had fought to leave him answers.
“Everyone leaves this room except Michael,” Daniel said.
Vanessa looked surprised.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
“I need time to understand what happened.”
Her eyes filled with regret.
“I know.”
“You should have told me.”
“I know.”
Daniel nodded.
“That does not mean I forgive you.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I understand.”
She walked toward the door slowly.
Before leaving, she looked at Sophie.
May you like
The little girl stood beside her father, holding the blue box.
Vanessa opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something.
