Chương 5

And for the first time, Daniel understood something.

The secret his wife had hidden was not buried with her.

It had been waiting for the right person to find it.

And now he was finally ready to uncover everything.

Daniel waited until Sophie was back upstairs before making the call.

He did not want her to see the uncertainty on his face.

Children noticed things adults thought they could hide.

They noticed pauses.

They noticed changes in voices.

They noticed when the people they trusted suddenly looked afraid.

Daniel had spent years trying to give Sophie a childhood where she felt safe.

He refused to let that disappear now.

He looked at the phone in his hand.

Michael’s name remained on the screen.

The same name that had appeared in family photos.

The same name that had stood beside him during the darkest days after his wife’s death.

The same name that now carried a question he did not want answered.

Vanessa stood across the room.

“Be careful,” she said.

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because if I am right, he already knows.”

Daniel studied her.

“How would he know?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she looked toward the stairs.

“Because he knew your wife was looking into the accounts.”

Daniel felt a wave of anger.

“You knew this and said nothing?”

“I was scared.”

“You were scared while my wife was fighting alone?”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

The honesty did not make it better.

It only made it harder.

Daniel turned away and pressed the call button.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then Michael answered.

“Daniel?”

His voice sounded normal.

Friendly.

Familiar.

That almost made it worse.

“Michael.”

A pause.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at the note.

“I need to talk to you.”

Another pause.

“Of course.”

Daniel listened carefully.

There was no hesitation.

No surprise.

Almost as if Michael had been waiting.

“Can you come over?”

Michael replied quickly.

“I can be there in twenty minutes.”

Daniel ended the call.

Vanessa watched him.

“You heard it too.”

Daniel looked at her.

“He sounded calm.”

“He is always calm.”

Daniel placed the phone on the table.

For years, he had admired that quality.

Michael was the person who could walk into any crisis and make everyone believe everything would be fine.

Now Daniel wondered if that calmness had always been something else.

Control.

Sophie came downstairs again a few minutes later.

Daniel immediately changed his expression.

He smiled.

“Hey.”

She looked at him carefully.

“Is everything okay?”

Daniel opened his arms.

She walked over and hugged him.

“Yes,” he said.

“We are okay.”

She nodded against his shoulder.

Vanessa quietly left the room.

Daniel noticed.

He did not stop her.

Not yet.

He needed answers from everyone.

But he also needed to understand what role each person had played.

Twenty minutes later, the sound of a car pulling into the driveway filled the house.

Daniel looked through the window.

Michael stepped out.

He was wearing a dark jacket and carrying his usual confident expression.

Nothing about him looked suspicious.

That was the problem.

Daniel opened the front door before Michael could knock.

“Daniel.”

Michael smiled.

Then he looked past him.

“Where is Sophie?”

Daniel did not move aside.

“She is upstairs.”

Michael’s smile faded slightly.

“What happened?”

Daniel stared at him.

“You tell me.”

The silence between them changed instantly.

Michael looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel stepped back.

“Come inside.”

Michael entered slowly.

His eyes moved around the room.

Then he noticed Vanessa standing near the hallway.

His expression changed.

Only for a moment.

But Daniel saw it.

“You two are together?” Michael asked.

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

Michael looked between them.

“You called me after talking to her.”

Vanessa looked surprised.

Daniel noticed.

Michael knew something.

“How did you know we talked?”

Michael stopped.

A small mistake.

A tiny mistake.

But Daniel caught it.

“I assumed.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“You did not assume.”

Michael looked away.

The confidence was disappearing.

Daniel closed the door.

“My wife left something behind.”

Michael’s face became still.

“What?”

Daniel watched him carefully.

“A note.”

Michael said nothing.

“It was hidden where nobody would find it.”

Still nothing.

Daniel took the folded paper from his pocket.

The reaction was immediate.

Michael’s eyes moved toward it.

Not curiosity.

Recognition.

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“You know what this is.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

“Do not lie to me.”

“I am not.”

“Then why did you look scared?”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“I am scared because you are accusing me.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“My daughter was hurt today.”

Michael looked toward the stairs.

“What happened?”

Daniel’s anger returned.

“Do not pretend you care now.”

Michael looked wounded.

“I do care.”

“Then explain why my wife thought she needed to hide information from me.”

Michael said nothing.

The silence answered.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

“She was right.”

Vanessa looked down.

Michael’s eyes moved to her.

“You told him?”

Vanessa froze.

Daniel immediately noticed.

“You knew she would tell me.”

Michael realized his mistake.

He had confirmed something.

Daniel felt the betrayal settle deeper.

“How long?”

Michael looked at him.

“How long what?”

“How long have you known?”

Michael did not answer.

Daniel’s voice grew colder.

“How long have you known my wife was investigating?”

Michael finally spoke.

“Since before she died.”

The words were quiet.

But they changed everything.

Daniel felt like the floor moved beneath him.

“You were helping her?”

Michael looked away.

“No.”

That answer was worse.

“You were stopping her?”

Michael’s silence was enough.

Daniel stepped back.

“Why?”

Michael looked exhausted.

“Because she was going to destroy everything.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Everything?”

“Our company.”

“Our reputation.”

“Your family.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Michael looked at him.

“She found the financial records.”

Daniel’s heart raced.

“And?”

“She was wrong.”

Daniel laughed once.

A bitter, disbelieving sound.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Then why hide it?”

May you like

Michael had no answer.

Daniel walked toward the table.
