Chương 4

The foundation.

The charity organization he and his wife had built together after their daughter was born.

It had been his wife’s greatest passion.

She had spent countless hours helping families, organizing donations, and making sure every dollar reached the people who needed it.

“She thought someone was stealing?” Daniel asked.

Vanessa nodded.

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

Sophie was upstairs.

Safe.

At least for the moment.

“When did she find this?”

“Months before she died.”

Daniel felt his breathing change.

“Why did nobody tell me?”

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“Because she was not sure who she could trust.”

The words hurt more than he expected.

His wife had been fighting something alone.

And he had never known.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because she was afraid you would confront the wrong person.”

Daniel said nothing.

The idea terrified him.

Not because it sounded impossible.

Because it sounded exactly like his wife.

She had always been careful.

Always thoughtful.

Always willing to carry a burden herself if she believed it protected the people she loved.

“She left the note for Sophie,” Daniel said.

Vanessa nodded.

“She wanted you to find it.”

“Why hide it in her hair?”

“Because she knew someone might search her things.”

Daniel looked down.

The tiny capsule suddenly felt heavier in his palm.

“Someone was watching her.”

Vanessa did not respond.

That silence was an answer.

Daniel stood.

“Who helped you?”

Vanessa looked confused.

“What?”

“You knew about the capsule.”

“No.”

“You reacted the moment you saw it.”

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You knew something was hidden.”

“I suspected.”

“Why?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because your wife told me.”

Daniel froze.

The answer was unexpected.

“You spoke to her about this?”

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“When?”

“Before she got worse.”

Daniel stared.

“Why did she trust you?”

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“She didn’t.”

The honesty surprised him.

“She was careful with me.”

“Then why tell you?”

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Because she wanted to know if I was involved.”

The words landed hard.

Daniel’s face changed.

“You were one of the people she suspected?”

Vanessa nodded.

“I was.”

“Then why are you still here?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because I was not the person she was afraid of.”

Daniel studied her.

For the first time, he wondered if Vanessa was only a villain in a much larger story.

But that did not erase what she had done.

It did not erase Sophie crying in that bathroom.

It did not erase the fear in his daughter’s eyes.

“You still cut my daughter’s hair.”

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.”

“You still made her feel worthless.”

“I know.”

“Whatever reason you had, you chose to hurt a child.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with shame.

“I thought if I scared her enough, she would give me what I needed.”

Daniel went silent.

“What did you need?”

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

“The note.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You knew there was a note.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Vanessa took a long breath.

“Because your wife told me she had created a backup.”

Daniel tightened his grip on the paper.

“She hid the original somewhere else.”

“No.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“She hid the information somewhere else.”

Daniel looked at the note.

“What information?”

Vanessa’s voice became almost a whisper.

“The person who was taking the money was not just stealing from the foundation.”

Daniel waited.

“They were building a case against you.”

The words felt impossible.

“Against me?”

Vanessa nodded.

“They wanted everything to look like you were responsible.”

Daniel felt a sudden wave of disbelief.

“My wife believed I was being framed?”

“Yes.”

“By who?”

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

The house was silent.

Then she spoke.

“Your closest friend.”

Daniel’s face changed.

He immediately thought of one person.

Someone who had been beside him for over a decade.

Someone who had helped him build his business.

Someone who had attended his wife’s funeral.

Someone who had hugged him and told him he would always protect his family.

“Michael?”

Vanessa did not answer.

She did not need to.

Daniel already knew.

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

He wanted it to be impossible.

He wanted to wake up and return to the moment before the bathroom door opened.

But the note in his hand was real.

Sophie’s fear was real.

His wife’s warning was real.

Vanessa watched his reaction.

“She found proof.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Where?”

“I do not know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I never saw it.”

“Then what did you see?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“A message.”

“From who?”

“Your wife.”

Daniel waited.

“She sent it the night before she went to the hospital.”

His heart stopped for a moment.

“What did it say?”

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, protect Sophie first. The truth will come later.’”

Daniel looked upstairs.

His daughter.

His wife’s final fear.

His entire world.

He folded the note carefully.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Where is Michael now?”

Vanessa’s expression turned serious.

“I do not know.”

Daniel picked up his phone.

He opened his contacts.

His thumb hovered over Michael’s name.

For years, that name had represented friendship.

Trust.

Family.

Now it looked like a warning.

Before he could press call, Sophie’s small voice came from the staircase.

“Dad?”

Daniel immediately looked up.

She stood there holding her stuffed animal tightly.

His expression softened.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

She looked at Vanessa.

Then back at him.

“Is Mom in trouble too?”

The question broke through every thought in his mind.

Daniel walked to the stairs and knelt.

“No.”

He reached for her hand.

“Mom was brave.”

Sophie looked at him.

“She was trying to help us?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Sophie looked at the note.

“Then we have to finish what she started.”

Daniel felt tears rise in his eyes.

A five-year-old girl had just repeated the strength her mother had always carried.

He pulled her into his arms.

May you like

“I think you are right.”

Behind them, Vanessa watched silently.
