Chương 3

“Then tell me.”
She hesitated.
The hesitation lasted only a few seconds, but it confirmed his suspicion.
There was something hidden.
Before Vanessa could speak, Daniel’s phone began ringing.
He looked at the screen.
It was his attorney.
He answered while keeping his eyes on Vanessa.
“Hello?”
A serious voice spoke from the other end.
Daniel listened quietly.
His expression changed.
“Are you sure?”
He walked a few steps away.
Sophie watched him.
Vanessa watched him too.
After a moment, Daniel ended the call.
He looked back at Vanessa.
“My attorney received a message this morning.”
Vanessa became still.
“What message?”
Daniel noticed the question came too quickly.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“You already know it is important.”
Vanessa looked nervous.
Daniel walked toward the table and placed the phone down.
“The message was from an unknown account.”
“What did it say?” Vanessa asked.
Daniel studied her face.
“It said someone was trying to access documents connected to my late wife.”
The color faded from Vanessa’s face.
Sophie looked between them.
Daniel saw the reaction.
He did not need another explanation.
The connection was there.
The hidden capsule.
The note.
The fear.
The strange behavior.
All of it was connected.
“Vanessa,” he said quietly.
“Did you know about this?”
She shook her head too quickly.
“No.”
Daniel did not answer.
He simply watched her.
People could hide words.
They could hide excuses.
But they could rarely hide fear.
Vanessa looked toward Sophie.
“I never wanted to hurt her.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“But you did.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.
“Because I was scared.”
Daniel waited.
“Scared of what?”
Vanessa looked at the note in his hand.
“Your wife.”
The words hung in the air.
Daniel felt a chill.
“My wife has been gone for years.”
“But she still planned for this.”
Vanessa immediately realized she had said too much.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?”
Vanessa backed away slightly.
“I should not have said that.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice became firm.
“You should explain.”
Sophie held onto his hand.
Daniel looked down at her and softened immediately.
“Go upstairs for a minute, sweetheart.”
Sophie looked uncertain.
“I do not want to leave you.”
“I know.”
He squeezed her hand.
“But I need to talk to Vanessa.”
Sophie looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Daniel.
“Are you going to be okay?”
The question broke his heart.
A five-year-old should not have to worry about protecting her father.
Daniel smiled gently.
Sophie slowly walked toward the stairs.
Daniel watched until she disappeared.
Then he turned back.
The softness left his face.
“What did my wife know?”
Vanessa remained silent.
“What did she find?”
Still nothing.
Daniel walked closer.
“I spent years believing her last months were filled with fear because she was sick.”
“She was sick.”
“Yes.”
“But she was also investigating something.”
Vanessa looked up.
Daniel continued.
“She hid a note inside Sophie’s hair.”
“She trusted our daughter to find it.”
“She trusted that one day someone would need to know the truth.”
Vanessa’s eyes moved away.
Daniel understood.
“You were afraid she would reveal something.”
Vanessa’s voice was barely audible.
“You do not understand.”
“Then help me understand.”
She sat down slowly.
For the first time since Daniel had known her, she looked defeated.
“She discovered information about people around you.”
“Who?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I cannot.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You cannot, or you will not?”
The question stayed between them.
A long silence followed.
Then Vanessa finally looked up.
“She knew someone close to her was lying.”
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Who?”
Vanessa looked toward the staircase where Sophie had gone.
Then back at him.
“Someone you trusted.”
Daniel’s hands tightened around the note.
The warning his wife had left behind suddenly felt much heavier.
Because now he knew it was not just about protecting Sophie.
It was about uncovering the truth his wife had died trying to reveal.
Daniel stood completely still after Vanessa spoke those words.
Someone he trusted.
The sentence repeated in his mind, louder each time.
For years, he had believed the hardest part of losing his wife was accepting that she was gone.
He had believed the pain came from empty rooms, forgotten routines, and the quiet moments when he instinctively reached for his phone to tell her something.
But now he wondered if he had been grieving only half of the truth.
He looked at the folded note in his hand.
His wife had not left a goodbye.
She had left a warning.
“Who was it?” Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked down.
“I cannot tell you.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You already hurt my daughter.”
“I know.”
“You already lied to me.”
“I know.”
“Then you do not get to stand here and protect someone else.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I was trying to protect myself.”
Daniel almost laughed, but there was no humor in it.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it is true.”
“From what?”
Vanessa did not answer.
Daniel moved toward the window.
Outside, the perfectly maintained garden looked peaceful.
The kind of peaceful that made what happened inside the house feel impossible.
He remembered the day he introduced Vanessa to Sophie.
He remembered how carefully he watched her.
How she smiled.
How she promised she understood that Sophie was not just a child.
She was the most important person in his life.
He had wanted to believe that promise.
Now he wondered how many warning signs he had ignored.
“Did my wife know about you?” Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked up.
“What?”
“Did she know something about you?”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Daniel saw it.
“She did.”
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel felt a cold weight settle in his chest.
“What did she find?”
Vanessa remained silent.
“Tell me.”
“She found records.”
“What records?”
“Financial records.”
Daniel stared at her.
“About what?”
Vanessa took a breath.
“Money that disappeared.”
The room felt smaller.
Daniel slowly sat down.
“From where?”
Vanessa hesitated.
May you like
“From the foundation.”
His eyes narrowed.
