Chương 7

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at him.

“When?”

“She told me she created a backup.”

Michael pointed toward the note.

“That was not the only copy.”

Daniel looked down.

“There is another one?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Michael hesitated.

Daniel’s patience disappeared.

“Where?”

Michael looked toward Sophie’s room upstairs.

“She hid it somewhere only Sophie would know.”

Daniel became confused.

“Sophie was five.”

“I know.”

“My daughter was a child.”

“Exactly.”

Daniel stared at him.

Michael continued.

“Your wife knew people would search your office, your computer, and your personal belongings.”

“But not a child’s things.”

Michael nodded.

“She knew nobody would think to look where Sophie kept her most important memories.”

Daniel felt his heart sink.

Sophie.

The thought of his daughter being connected to this secret frightened him.

Not because she had done anything wrong.

Because someone else had put her near danger.

“I want to know everything,” Daniel said.

Michael nodded.

“You deserve to.”

“Start from the beginning.”

Michael took a slow breath.

“Your wife discovered the first irregular payment about a year before she died.”

Daniel listened carefully.

“She thought it was an accounting mistake.”

“But it wasn’t.”

“No.”

“How much?”

“Small amounts at first.”

“How small?”

“Amounts designed not to attract attention.”

Daniel understood.

Someone had been careful.

“They were testing the system.”

“Yes.”

“Then they increased.”

Michael nodded.

“By the time your wife realized what was happening, thousands had disappeared.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“And she knew?”

Vanessa looked down.

“I saw some of the records.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“You saw them and said nothing.”

“I was trying to figure out who was involved.”

“You could have told me.”

“I thought I would make it worse.”

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

He looked between them.

“Everyone decided what was best for me.”

“No one asked me.”

The room became silent.

That was the truth none of them could argue with.

Daniel had spent years believing he was protecting his family.

But during that time, others had been making decisions around him.

Michael stood.

“There is one more thing.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

“Your wife left another message.”

Daniel froze.

“What message?”

Michael reached into his jacket pocket.

Daniel immediately tensed.

“What are you doing?”

Michael slowly removed a small envelope.

“I kept this because I promised her I would only give it to you when I knew Sophie was safe.”

Daniel stared at the envelope.

“Why now?”

“Because today changed everything.”

Michael held it out.

Daniel did not take it immediately.

He looked at the envelope.

Then at Michael.

Then at Vanessa.

Finally, he accepted it.

His wife’s handwriting was visible on the front.

His hands became unsteady.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

Only a few lines.

Daniel read the first sentence.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

Michael watched him.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Because they both knew what he had discovered.

The person his wife feared most was not a stranger.

It was someone who had been invited into their home.

Someone who had watched Sophie grow up.

Someone who had smiled at Daniel while hiding the truth.

Daniel slowly lowered the paper.

And for the first time since opening the bathroom door, he understood the real danger.

The person who had tried to destroy his family was not outside the walls of his house.

They had already been inside.

Daniel looked at the paper again, hoping the words would somehow change.

They did not.

The handwriting remained the same.

The warning remained the same.

And the name written at the bottom remained impossible to accept.

He had expected a stranger.

He had expected a rival.

He had expected someone who wanted money or power.

He had not expected the person his wife had feared to be someone who had sat at their dinner table.

Someone who had held Sophie when she was a baby.

Someone who had promised Daniel that he would always protect his family.

Michael watched his face carefully.

“You know now.”

Daniel slowly folded the paper.

“How long?”

Michael looked confused.

“How long what?”

“How long did my wife know?”

Michael took a breath.

“Months.”

Daniel nodded.

“Months.”

The word came out quietly.

“She was afraid for months, and I had no idea.”

“She did not want to scare you.”

Daniel looked at him.

“She was my wife.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You do not know.”

The room became silent.

“You were there.”

“You knew she was searching for answers.”

“You knew she was afraid.”

“And I was here thinking everything was getting better.”

Michael looked down.

Daniel walked toward the window.

The same window where he had watched Sophie play in the backyard.

The same window where his wife used to stand with a cup of coffee every morning.

He remembered her smile.

He remembered how she always noticed when something was wrong.

And now he realized something painful.

She had been trying to tell him.

He had just not understood.

“What exactly did she write?” Vanessa asked softly.

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, he noticed something different in her expression.

Not curiosity.

Fear.

She was afraid of what the letter said.

Daniel did not answer immediately.

He wanted to understand why.

He wanted to know what these people had been hiding.

Then he unfolded the paper again.

“My wife wrote that the person responsible was someone she trusted.”

Michael nodded.

“She suspected.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Suspected?”

“Yes.”

“She was sure enough to write this.”

“She was still collecting proof.”

Daniel looked at the paper.

There was one more sentence.

A sentence he had not said aloud.

A sentence that had been written for him.

If you are reading this, it means I could not finish what I started.

But please remember one thing.

Do not trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you while keeping you in the dark.

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

He looked at Michael.

May you like

Then Vanessa.

Both of them lowered their eyes.
