Chương 1

"""The bathroom door stood half open when Daniel heard the buzzing sound that did not belong in his quiet afternoon.

He stopped in the hallway, confused for only a second before the fear inside him pushed him forward.

The luxury bathroom that had once felt warm and peaceful suddenly looked like a place where something terrible had happened.

Vanessa stood beside the marble counter with an electric hair clipper in her hand.

Sophie sat on the small stool beneath the bright lights, her tiny shoulders trembling as blonde strands continued falling around her pink pajamas.

A large uneven patch on one side of her head had already been shaved away, leaving her beautiful blonde hair damaged and unfamiliar.

Daniel froze in the doorway.

His eyes moved from the clippers to the piles of hair on the floor, then to his five-year-old daughter’s tear-filled face.

Sophie slowly looked up and saw him.

“Dad,” she whispered.

The single word broke something inside him.

Daniel had imagined many moments when he would need to protect his daughter.

He had imagined storms, accidents, strangers, and dangers outside their home.

He had never imagined that the person standing beside her would be the reason she was afraid.

Vanessa turned around slowly.

For a moment, her expression remained calm.

She looked almost annoyed that Daniel had interrupted her.

“Daniel, you are overreacting,” she said.

But he barely heard her.

All he could see was Sophie shrinking away from the woman holding the clippers.

He stepped into the bathroom.

“Sophie,” he said softly, keeping his voice steady, “come here.”

Sophie tried to stand, but her legs shook.

Daniel moved closer and reached out his hand.

She immediately ran toward him and grabbed his arm.

He wrapped himself around her, shielding her small body with his own.

Vanessa lowered the clippers slightly.

“I was trying to teach her a lesson,” she said.

Daniel looked at her with disbelief.

“A lesson?”

His voice was quiet, but the anger beneath it was impossible to miss.

Vanessa straightened her shoulders.

“She has been acting spoiled,” she replied.

“She needed to understand that actions have consequences.”

Daniel looked down at the hair covering the floor.

He saw tiny strands of blonde hair stuck to Sophie’s pajamas.

He saw the frightened expression on his daughter’s face.

He saw the way she held onto him as if letting go would make the nightmare start again.

“What kind of lesson requires hurting a child?” he asked.

Vanessa opened her mouth, but no answer came.

The silence became heavier than any argument.

Daniel slowly took the clippers from her hand.

He placed them on the counter far away from Sophie.

“You are done.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

The confidence disappeared.

“You cannot talk to me like that.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“I can when you are standing in front of my daughter with a pair of clippers and she is crying.”

Sophie buried her face against his shirt.

Daniel looked down at her.

“It’s okay,” he whispered.

“I’m here.”

The words seemed simple, but they were everything Sophie needed to hear.

For the first time in several minutes, her breathing began to slow.

Vanessa watched them.

Something in her expression shifted from anger to uncertainty.

“You do not understand what happened,” she said.

Daniel looked at her.

“Then explain.”

Vanessa hesitated.

“She was being difficult.”

Daniel waited.

“She refused to listen.”

Daniel continued waiting.

“And that means you decided to cut her hair?”

Vanessa looked away.

The answer was already clear.

Daniel noticed something unusual.

Sophie was holding one small lock of hair tightly in her hand.

He looked down.

“Sophie, what is that?”

The little girl looked nervous.

She glanced at Vanessa.

Then she looked back at her father.

“She told me not to show anyone.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Who told you?”

Sophie swallowed.

“Vanessa.”

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That is not what happened.”

Daniel raised one hand, stopping her.

“Let her speak.”

Sophie looked at the small lock of hair.

“She said I did something bad.”

Her voice shook.

“She said pretty girls need to be perfect.”

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

Sophie slowly opened her fingers.

Inside the folded lock of hair was something tiny.

A small capsule.

Daniel stared at it.

Vanessa went completely still.

The reaction was immediate.

Too immediate.

Daniel noticed.

He saw the fear flash across her face before she could hide it.

“What is that?” he asked.

Vanessa did not answer.

Daniel carefully took the capsule.

Sophie stepped closer to him.

“I found it when Mom brushed my hair before she got sick.”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

The room became silent.

His wife had been gone for years, but memories of her still lived everywhere.

The small notes she used to leave.

The songs she sang.

The way she always made Sophie laugh.

Daniel had spent years trying to preserve every piece of her memory for their daughter.

And now there was something he had never seen.

A secret his late wife had hidden.

Vanessa’s voice became nervous.

“Daniel, you do not know what that is.”

He looked at her.

“You seem very worried about it.”

“I am worried because you are making assumptions.”

Daniel ignored her.

He opened the tiny capsule carefully.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

His hands stopped moving.

He recognized the handwriting before he even opened it.

His wife’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that had filled birthday cards, grocery lists, and little reminders on the refrigerator.

His breathing changed.

“Sophie,” he whispered.

The little girl looked up.

“Is it Mom?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

A tear moved down his face, but he quickly wiped it away.

He unfolded the note.

Only a few words were written inside.

Daniel read them silently.

If Sophie ever finds this, please know that I trusted her heart more than anyone else’s words.

Daniel looked at the message again.

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

The woman who had been so confident moments earlier now looked frightened.

“What did you do?” Daniel asked.
