Chương 7

Alexander looked frustrated.

“Then what did you see?”

Eleanor took a breath.

“A list.”

“A list of what?”

“People.”

The answer unsettled everyone.

“People who could be trusted.”

Clara frowned.

“And?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“People who could not.”

The line went silent.

Richard spoke again.

“And Clara’s name was on it.”

Clara felt frozen.

“What did it say?”

Richard laughed.

“You will have to find out yourself.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“Where is the file?”

No answer.

The call ended.

The sudden silence felt worse than the conversation.

Alexander slowly lowered the phone.

Everyone stood still.

Then Clara looked at Eleanor.

“You know where it is.”

Eleanor did not respond.

But her expression was enough.

She knew.

And she had been hiding one more truth.

Outside the mansion, the dark vehicle remained parked near the gates.

Richard watched the lights inside the house.

He knew they had found the first secret.

He knew they were searching for the second.

But he also knew something they did not.

The final file did not only expose him.

It exposed the reason Clara had survived all those years.

And when she discovered the truth, she would finally understand why her father never stopped protecting her.

And when she discovered the truth, she would finally understand why her father never stopped protecting her.

Clara stood completely still after the call ended.

The silence inside the study felt heavier than before.

Every person in the room was carrying a different version of the same question.

What had Clara’s father known that nobody else had been allowed to see?

Alexander looked at Eleanor.

“Where is the file?”

Eleanor did not answer.

Her silence was no longer a refusal.

It was fear.

“Mother.”

Alexander’s voice softened slightly.

“Please.”

The word affected her more than anger would have.

For years, Eleanor had been prepared for accusations.

She had built walls against anger.

She knew how to fight against blame.

But she did not know how to respond when someone she loved simply asked for the truth.

“The file was hidden,” Eleanor finally said.

“By your father.”

Clara stepped closer.

“Where?”

Eleanor looked toward the hallway leading to the old wing of the mansion.

“There is a room.”

Alexander frowned.

“My father’s private archive?”

Eleanor nodded.

“The room nobody entered after he died.”

Clara remembered that place.

She had passed by the door many times as a young woman.

She remembered asking about it once.

She remembered Eleanor’s answer.

Some things were better left untouched.

At the time, Clara believed it was just another family rule.

Now she understood.

It had always been about secrets.

“Why was I never allowed inside?” Alexander asked.

Eleanor looked at him.

“Because your father wanted it that way.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

“My father trusted me.”

“He did.”

“Then why hide things from me?”

Eleanor looked down.

“Because he believed you would be targeted if you knew too much.”

Alexander became quiet.

The explanation did not make everything better.

But it made the past more complicated.

Clara looked at Eleanor.

“What exactly did your husband know about Richard?”

Eleanor walked slowly toward the door.

“Enough to be afraid.”

The three of them moved through the mansion together.

The same halls that had once felt luxurious now felt like a museum of hidden memories.

Every painting.

Every piece of furniture.

Every locked door seemed to hold another unanswered question.

They reached the old wing at the far end of the house.

The area was darker than the rest of the mansion.

The lights flickered slightly.

Dust covered parts of the hallway.

It was clear nobody had been there for years.

Alexander stopped in front of a large wooden door.

“This was always locked.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Your father kept the only key.”

Clara looked at the door.

“Where is the key now?”

Eleanor reached into the pocket of her coat.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then she removed a small silver key.

Alexander stared at it.

“You kept it all this time?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“Because I knew one day someone would need to see what was inside.”

Clara studied her face.

“You always knew this day would come.”

Eleanor did not deny it.

“Yes.”

The admission surprised Clara.

“Then why did you fight me?”

“Because I was afraid of what you would find.”

The answer was honest.

And that honesty made it more painful.

Eleanor placed the key into the lock.

The sound echoed through the empty hallway.

The door opened slowly.

Inside was a small private archive.

Not a room full of wealth.

Not a hidden treasure.

Just shelves.

Boxes.

Old files.

And a single desk covered with years of forgotten memories.

Alexander stepped inside first.

His eyes moved across everything.

“My father spent years in here.”

Eleanor nodded.

“He was trying to protect everyone.”

Clara walked toward the desk.

On top of it was a small envelope.

Her name was written across the front.

Her breath stopped.

Alexander noticed.

“Clara.”

She reached for it slowly.

Her fingers touched the paper.

She recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her father’s.

The man she believed abandoned her.

The man she believed chose silence over her.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside was a single letter.

Clara,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.

I am sorry that it took so long.

I am sorry that my choices caused you pain.

But I need you to know one thing.

I never stopped believing in you.

Clara’s vision blurred.

She continued reading.

When you began asking questions, Richard realized you were close to discovering what he had done.

He wanted you removed from the family.

He wanted everyone to believe you were the problem.

I tried to stop him.

I failed.

But I found a way to protect you.

The letter shook slightly in Clara’s hands.

Alexander watched her face change.

“What does it say?”

She could barely speak.

“He knew.”

May you like

A tear moved down her cheek.

“He knew everything.”
