Chương 5

“I keep thinking there must be an explanation that makes everything less terrible.”

“There usually is not.”

The honesty surprised him.

But it also helped.

Clara had never tried to make the truth easier.

She had only tried to make it impossible to ignore.

A knock came from the doorway.

Both of them turned.

Eleanor stood there.

She looked different without her usual confidence.

The perfect posture was gone.

The controlled expression was gone.

She looked like someone who had finally realized that power could disappear overnight.

“I need to speak with both of you,” Eleanor said.

Alexander stared at her.

“About what?”

“About Richard.”

Clara immediately became more alert.

Eleanor stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Eleanor sat down across from them.

A position she had avoided her entire life.

She was no longer standing above everyone.

She was finally sitting at the same level.

“I made mistakes,” Eleanor said.

Alexander’s expression remained cold.

“That is a very small way to describe what happened.”

“I know.”

The answer came without an argument.

Clara noticed.

This was not the Eleanor she remembered.

Or perhaps it was the Eleanor who existed beneath all the defenses.

“I want you to understand something,” Eleanor continued.

“I did not begin this because I wanted money.”

Alexander looked at her.

“Then why?”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“Fear.”

The word sounded strange coming from her.

“I was afraid of losing everything.”

Clara crossed her arms.

“You had everything.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice became softer.

“I had the appearance of everything.”

She looked at Alexander.

“Your father built this empire, but he never understood the people around him.”

Alexander frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means he trusted too easily.”

Eleanor paused.

“And Richard knew that.”

The room became quiet.

“Richard was not just managing accounts,” Eleanor said.

“He was manipulating them.”

Alexander leaned forward.

“Why did you protect him?”

Eleanor looked down.

“Because I thought I could control him.”

Clara immediately understood.

That had always been Eleanor’s weakness.

She believed every problem could be managed if she had enough information.

Enough influence.

Enough control.

But some people used that confidence against her.

“You made a deal with him,” Clara said.

Eleanor looked at her.

“Yes.”

Alexander stood up.

The movement was sudden.

“You knew.”

His voice carried disbelief.

“You knew someone was stealing from my father and you made a deal with him?”

“I was trying to stop it.”

“No.”

Alexander shook his head.

“You were trying to hide it.”

Eleanor accepted the accusation.

“Both things can be true.”

Clara watched Alexander struggle with anger.

She knew he wanted to reject every word.

But the evidence was too strong.

“What did Richard want?” he asked.

Eleanor hesitated.

“Control.”

“Over what?”

“The company.”

The answer was immediate.

“He believed your father should have chosen him as successor.”

Alexander gave a bitter laugh.

“He was never even considered.”

“No.”

Eleanor looked away.

“Because your father knew exactly what Richard was capable of.”

Clara walked toward the desk.

“And when your husband became sick, Richard saw an opportunity.”

Eleanor nodded.

“He started moving money.”

“Why did you not expose him?”

Eleanor looked at Clara.

“Because he threatened me.”

The room changed.

Alexander stopped moving.

“What did he threaten you with?”

Eleanor swallowed.

“Your family.”

Clara studied her face.

This was the first time she saw genuine fear.

Not fear of losing status.

Fear of losing someone.

“He knew things about everyone.”

Eleanor continued.

“He knew secrets your father kept hidden.”

Alexander looked confused.

“My father had secrets?”

“Yes.”

The answer unsettled him.

“What kind of secrets?”

Eleanor looked at Clara.

That glance carried something important.

Something Clara did not understand.

“What?”

Clara asked.

Eleanor looked back at Alexander.

“Your father did not send Clara away because he wanted to punish her.”

Clara froze.

“What are you saying?”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“He was trying to protect her.”

The words changed the entire room.

Alexander looked between them.

“Protect her from what?”

Eleanor looked toward the old documents.

“From Richard.”

Clara felt her chest tighten.

For years, she believed Alexander’s father abandoned her.

She believed the Whitmore family decided she was disposable.

But now another possibility appeared.

A painful one.

A confusing one.

“Why did nobody tell me?” Clara whispered.

Eleanor looked at her.

“Because Richard made sure nobody could.”

Alexander moved closer.

“What did he do?”

Eleanor’s voice became quieter.

“He created a story.”

She looked at Clara.

“He convinced everyone you were unstable.”

Clara’s face changed.

The same accusation that had followed her for years.

The same label that destroyed her reputation.

“He forged documents,” Eleanor said.

“He manipulated conversations.”

“He paid people to confirm his lies.”

Alexander stared at his mother.

“And you believed him?”

Eleanor looked away.

“At first.”

The answer hurt more than if she had denied it.

Clara looked down.

A strange mixture of anger and relief moved through her.

She had spent years blaming herself.

Wondering if she had imagined the betrayal.

Wondering if everyone was right about her.

But she had not been wrong.

She had been targeted.

Alexander walked toward the window.

His hands rested against the frame.

“Where is Richard now?”

Eleanor did not answer immediately.

That hesitation returned.

Clara noticed.

Alexander noticed too.

“Where is he?”

Eleanor finally looked at him.

“He is still alive.”

The words created a silence unlike any before.

“And he knows Clara is back.”

Outside the mansion, a dark vehicle slowly stopped near the gates.

A man inside watched the house through the windshield.

He held a phone in his hand.

On the screen was a photograph of Clara.

His expression remained calm.

Almost amused.

“She found the files,” he said quietly.

A voice answered from the phone.

“What do we do?”

The man looked toward the mansion.

“Nothing yet.”

He smiled faintly.

“Let them believe they are winning.”

Inside, Clara felt a sudden chill.

May you like

She did not know why.

But after everything she had uncovered, one thing became clear.
