Chương 7

"Because I was ashamed."

Emma waited.

"I spent years telling myself I was waiting for the right moment."

He looked at her.

"But there was never a right moment."

That answer was the closest thing to the truth he had given her.

Emma nodded slowly.

"You're right."

Daniel looked surprised.

"There was never a right moment."

She looked toward the guests.

"But there was a wrong choice."

Daniel accepted it.

"I know."

Emma took a deep breath.

"I don't know if I can forgive you."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

"But Lily wanted me to find the truth."

She looked at the people around her.

"So I will."

Daniel looked at her carefully.

"What are you going to do?"

Emma turned toward Olivia and Michael.

"We finish what she started."

For the first time that night, Daniel saw something different in Emma.

Not just grief.

Not just anger.

Strength.

The same strength Lily had carried.

And he realized the secret they had protected for so long was no longer theirs to control.

The truth belonged to the person who had been denied it.

Emma.

The next morning, the hotel looked completely different.

The flowers from the wedding were still arranged along the walls.

The elegant decorations remained untouched.

But the celebration was gone.

In its place was a quiet building filled with unanswered questions.

Emma sat alone in one of the hotel's private rooms, staring at the documents spread across the table.

The black VIP card.

Lily's letter.

Daniel's confession.

The recording device.

Each piece told part of the story.

But together, they revealed something much larger than a family secret.

They revealed years of choices made by people who believed silence could prevent pain.

Emma had spent the night awake.

She did not cry anymore.

She had cried enough.

Now she was trying to understand.

Across from her, Olivia placed a cup of coffee on the table.

"You didn't sleep."

Emma looked up.

"Neither did you."

Olivia gave a small, tired smile.

"No."

For a moment, they sat in silence.

The strange thing was that after everything they discovered, silence no longer felt like a wall between them.

It felt like two people carrying the same loss.

"I blamed you for years," Emma said.

Olivia nodded.

"I know."

"I thought you were hiding something because you hurt Lily."

"I was hiding something."

Emma looked at her.

Olivia accepted the truth.

"But not because I wanted to hurt her."

She looked down at her hands.

"I was afraid."

Emma studied her carefully.

"Afraid of what?"

"That if I told you everything, you would lose the last pieces of your family."

Emma looked away.

"Maybe I deserved to know."

"Yes."

The answer surprised her.

Olivia continued.

"You deserved the truth."

She took a breath.

"But Lily was afraid of what would happen after."

Emma touched the letter beside her.

"She always protected me."

Olivia's eyes filled with emotion.

"She loved you more than anything."

Emma looked at the photograph from the box.

It showed Lily standing in the old hotel lounge.

She was younger.

Smiling.

Holding the same black VIP card.

But there was something else in the picture.

A person standing behind her.

A person whose face had been cut out.

Emma noticed it immediately.

"Who removed this?"

Olivia looked at the photograph.

"I don't know."

Michael entered the room carrying a folder.

"I might."

Both women turned toward him.

He placed the folder on the table.

"I found this hidden in the old storage room downstairs."

Emma opened it.

Inside were copies of old hotel records.

Guest lists.

Security reports.

Financial documents.

And one photograph.

A complete version of the same image.

Emma picked it up.

Her heart stopped.

The missing person was finally visible.

A man standing behind Lily.

A man she recognized.

Not from her memories.

But from Daniel's old photographs.

"Who is he?" Olivia asked.

Emma stared at the image.

"This is Richard Vale."

Michael nodded.

"Your father's business partner."

Emma felt a cold wave move through her.

She had heard that name before.

Years ago.

When she was young.

Her father used to mention Richard as someone he trusted completely.

But after her father's death, Richard disappeared from their lives.

"Why was he with Lily?"

Michael opened the folder.

"Because he was the one who had the original evidence."

Emma looked at him.

"What evidence?"

"The documents showing who changed the company records."

"And he gave them to Lily?"

Michael shook his head.

"No."

"Then why was he there?"

Michael hesitated.

"Because he wanted something from her."

Emma's expression hardened.

"What?"

"We don't know."

The uncertainty frustrated her.

After everything they had discovered, there were still missing pieces.

But this time, Emma was not alone.

She had people who were willing to search with her.

That alone felt different.

Daniel entered the room quietly.

Nobody spoke at first.

Emma looked at him.

He looked exhausted.

Older than he had the night before.

"I found something," he said.

Michael looked at him carefully.

"What?"

Daniel placed an old envelope on the table.

"I found this in my office."

Emma looked at the envelope.

"Where?"

"Behind a panel in my desk."

Olivia frowned.

"Someone hid it there."

Daniel nodded.

"I think so."

Emma opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

A handwritten message.

Not from Lily.

Not from Daniel.

From Richard Vale.

The words were short.

But they changed everything.

"Daniel, you should have listened when I warned you."

"Your daughter knows too much."

Emma's hand froze.

The message continued.

"If you want to protect your family, stop searching."

"Some truths are buried for a reason."

Michael looked angry.

"He threatened Lily."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

He pointed to the bottom of the page.

"He threatened all of us."

Emma read the final line.

"Your wife will never forgive you when she learns what you did."

The words cut deeper than she expected.

She looked at Daniel.

"What did you do?"

May you like

Daniel closed his eyes.

The question he feared had returned.
