Chương 3

Emma looked at Olivia.

The woman who had seemed like the person holding the secret was actually the person trying to protect it.

"Then who was she protecting Lily from?" Emma whispered.

Daniel did not answer.

The silence became unbearable.

Then a voice came from behind them.

"Maybe I should tell her."

Everyone turned.

Standing near the entrance of the reception hall was Michael Hayes, Olivia's older brother and one of the few people who knew about the night Lily disappeared.

His expression was serious.

His hands were shaking slightly.

Emma had seen him before.

He was always quiet.

Always distant.

Always avoiding conversations about Lily.

But now he walked toward them.

"Michael," Daniel said sharply.

Michael ignored him.

"I was there that night."

Emma felt the room spin slightly.

"You were there?"

Michael nodded.

"I saw what happened."

Daniel stepped forward.

"You don't know the whole story."

Michael looked at him with disappointment.

"I know enough."

Emma felt anger rising inside her.

All these years.

So many people knew.

So many people carried pieces of the truth.

And she was the only one left behind.

"Why?" she asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

"Why did everyone let me believe I had lost my daughter without knowing what really happened?"

Michael looked at her with sadness.

"Because Lily asked us not to tell you."

Emma shook her head.

"My daughter would never want me to suffer."

Michael's eyes became wet.

"She didn't want you to suffer."

"Then why?"

"Because she was protecting you."

Those words broke something inside Emma.

Protecting her.

Even in her final days, Lily had been protecting her.

But from what?

Michael reached into his jacket pocket and removed an old folded envelope.

Emma recognized it immediately.

It was the kind of envelope Lily used when she wanted to keep something safe.

Her hands trembled as Michael held it out.

"Lily gave this to me three months before she passed away."

Emma stared at it.

"Why didn't you give it to me?"

Michael looked at Daniel.

That single glance carried years of conflict.

"Because someone begged me not to."

Emma slowly turned toward her husband.

Daniel looked away.

And finally, the truth she had been chasing became clearer.

The secret was not hidden because nobody knew.

It was hidden because the people closest to her chose silence.

Emma took the envelope from Michael.

She held it carefully, afraid that opening it would change everything.

The entire reception hall waited.

Even the guests who did not understand the situation could feel that something important was about to be revealed.

Emma looked at Daniel one last time.

"Did Lily write this before she died?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"Did you read it?"

His silence answered for him.

Emma closed her eyes.

A single tear finally escaped.

Not because of what she had learned.

Because of what she was about to learn.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter written in Lily's familiar handwriting.

The first sentence immediately made Emma stop breathing.

"Mom, if you are reading this, it means they finally stopped hiding the truth from you."

The room disappeared around her.

There was only the letter.

Her daughter's words.

And the secret waiting inside.

The words on the page blurred as Emma stared at the handwriting she knew better than her own.

She traced the first line with her eyes again, hoping somehow she had misunderstood.

But the message remained unchanged.

"Mom, if you are reading this, it means they finally stopped hiding the truth from you."

Her fingers tightened around the paper.

For a moment, she could not move.

The woman who had spent years searching for answers suddenly had the truth sitting in her hands, written by the person she had lost.

Daniel took a small step forward.

"Emma..."

She immediately looked up.

"Don't."

Her voice was quiet, but everyone heard the warning.

Daniel stopped.

Emma lowered her eyes back to the letter.

The room around her disappeared.

The guests.

The decorations.

The music.

Everything faded away until there was only Lily's voice living through the words on the paper.

"Mom, I know you think everyone failed you."

"I know you think people kept secrets because they didn't care enough to tell you."

"But the truth is more complicated than that."

Emma swallowed hard.

Every sentence felt like Lily was standing beside her.

"I need you to know that I was never angry at you."

"You were the only person who always believed me."

"You were the only person who never made me feel like my memories were wrong."

Emma closed her eyes.

The pain inside her chest became almost impossible to carry.

For years, people had told her that grief could change memories.

They told her that trauma could create questions where there were no answers.

But Lily knew.

Lily always knew.

Emma continued reading.

"The night at the hotel was not what everyone thinks."

"I was not lost."

"I was not confused."

"I left because I heard something I was never supposed to hear."

Emma looked up slowly.

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

He looked away.

That reaction confirmed her fear.

She looked back at the letter.

"I heard Dad talking to someone."

"I heard him say that the truth would destroy our family."

Emma's breathing became shallow.

The words felt impossible.

Her husband.

The man who promised to protect their family.

The man who held her hand when Lily was sick.

The man who cried beside her when they thought there were no answers.

He had known.

"I wanted to tell you, Mom."

"But Dad begged me not to."

"He told me you would break if you knew."

Emma's hands began shaking.

Daniel whispered her name.

But she ignored him.

"I thought about telling you many times."

"Every time I saw you crying alone, I wanted to tell you everything."

May you like

"But then I saw how much you loved him."

"And I was afraid that telling you the truth would take away the last person you had left."
