Chương 6

And above them, the wedding celebration continued as if the world had not changed.
But Emma knew that by the time the night ended, her family would never be the same again.
Daniel was still standing in the reception hall when the elevator doors opened again.
The guests had returned to their conversations, but the atmosphere had changed.
Everyone could feel that something important had happened below.
Daniel looked toward the elevator and saw Emma step out.
Her expression was different.
The anger was still there.
The pain was still there.
But something else had appeared.
Understanding.
And that frightened him more than her anger ever could.
Emma walked toward him slowly.
Olivia and Michael followed behind her.
Nobody spoke.
The silence between them carried years of hidden memories.
Daniel looked at the recording device in Emma's hand.
Then he looked at the letter.
He knew.
He knew she had seen everything.
"I can explain," he said quietly.
Emma stopped a few feet away.
"You always say that."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I know."
"No," Emma said.
"You don't know."
Her voice was calm.
That calmness hurt him more than shouting would have.
"You don't know what it feels like to spend years believing your child left this world with unanswered pain."
Daniel swallowed.
"I know I failed you."
Emma looked at him.
"Did you?"
The question surprised him.
She continued.
"Or did you fail Lily?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
The answer was too painful.
"Both."
The honesty was the first thing he had given her all night.
And somehow, that made everything harder.
Emma looked around the room.
The beautiful decorations.
The flowers.
The people celebrating a future while her family was finally facing its past.
"Tell me everything."
Daniel looked at her.
"I don't know if you will forgive me."
"I didn't ask you for forgiveness."
She held the recording device tightly.
"I asked for the truth."
Daniel nodded slowly.
Then he began.
"Your father and my father were partners."
Emma listened.
"Years ago, they created a development company together."
"The business grew quickly."
"But behind the success, there were problems."
"What kind of problems?"
Daniel took a breath.
"People were forced out of their homes."
"Records were changed."
"Money disappeared."
Emma felt sick.
"My father did that?"
Daniel looked away.
"He was involved."
The words hurt even though she had never known the details of her father's work.
She had spent her whole life believing she understood the man he was.
Now she wondered how much of that understanding was built on a lie.
"My family discovered what happened," Daniel continued.
"But instead of exposing it, they protected themselves."
"And you?"
"I was young."
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"I thought I could fix it later."
Emma stared at him.
"Later."
The word carried disappointment.
"Everyone always thought there would be more time."
Daniel accepted the accusation.
"I found the documents years after we married."
Emma's eyes narrowed.
"You knew before Lily found them?"
"Yes."
"And you never told me?"
"I was afraid."
Emma shook her head.
"Afraid of what?"
"That you would see me differently."
She almost smiled sadly.
"Daniel, I already see you differently."
He looked like he wanted to say something.
But he stopped.
Because there was nothing he could say that would undo years of silence.
"When Lily discovered the documents, she confronted me," Daniel continued.
"She was angry."
"She told me I was just like everyone else."
Emma closed her eyes.
She could imagine Lily saying those words.
Her daughter always had a strong sense of right and wrong.
"She wanted to go to the police."
"What did you do?"
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I begged her to wait."
"Why?"
"Because I was trying to gather enough evidence."
Emma looked at Olivia.
"That was when she found you."
Olivia nodded.
"Lily came to me because she didn't trust anyone else."
"She thought I would turn against her."
"But I didn't."
Emma believed her now.
The truth was painful, but it was finally making sense.
"Then what happened that night?"
Daniel became silent.
The question he had avoided for years had finally arrived.
"I came to the hotel because I had arranged a meeting."
"With who?"
"Someone who had proof."
"Proof of what?"
"Who was responsible for everything."
Emma waited.
Daniel looked toward the old hallway leading downstairs.
"But someone followed Lily."
The room became colder.
"Who?"
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know."
Emma studied his face.
"You really don't know?"
"No."
For the first time, she believed him.
Not because she trusted him completely.
But because his fear looked real.
"Lily ran after she saw them arguing with me."
"She thought I was part of it."
Daniel's voice cracked.
"She thought I was trying to stop the truth from coming out."
Emma felt tears forming.
"She was scared of you."
"I know."
Daniel looked broken.
"And that is the part I regret the most."
He wiped his face.
"Not the business."
"Not the secrets."
"My daughter looked at me and thought I was someone she needed to escape from."
Nobody spoke.
The confession settled over the room.
Emma looked at the man she had loved for years.
She saw his mistakes.
His fear.
His guilt.
But she also saw the father who had lost his daughter.
A father who had been carrying his own punishment.
"What happened after she disappeared?" Emma asked.
Daniel took a deep breath.
"I found her with Olivia."
"She had the evidence."
"She wanted to give it to you."
Emma frowned.
"Then why didn't she?"
Daniel looked at the floor.
"Because she heard me talking to someone."
"She heard me say I would protect you no matter what."
Emma's expression changed.
"She misunderstood."
"Yes."
Daniel's voice became softer.
"She thought I meant protecting the secret."
"But I meant protecting you from the people who created it."
Emma looked at the letter again.
Lily had known.
Not everything.
But enough.
May you like
"Why didn't you tell me after she died?"
Daniel's face collapsed.
