Chương 5

A letter he had written but never delivered.

Emma began reading.

"Lily, I don't know if I will ever be brave enough to tell your mother what happened."

"Every day I tell myself I am protecting her."

"But deep down, I know I am protecting myself."

Emma stopped.

Her fingers tightened around the paper.

She continued.

"I made a decision that night that changed everything."

"I thought I was saving our family."

"I thought one lie could prevent a lifetime of pain."

"But I was wrong."

Emma looked at the words again.

Daniel had admitted it.

Not to her.

Not to anyone.

But to Lily.

"I knew you heard the conversation."

"I knew you saw the documents."

"I knew you understood that your grandfather's company was involved."

Emma froze.

Her grandfather's company.

She looked at Michael.

"What does this mean?"

Michael took a deep breath.

"Lily discovered something about your father's old business records."

Emma shook her head.

"My father?"

She had not thought about him in years.

Her father had passed away before Lily was born.

His company had been considered a successful family business.

Everyone remembered him as a hardworking man who built something from nothing.

"What did Lily find?" Emma asked.

Michael hesitated.

"The hotel where we are standing used to be owned by your family."

Emma felt a chill move through her body.

She looked around the room.

The luxury.

The expensive decorations.

The wedding celebration above them.

All of it connected to a history she never knew existed.

"Your father had a private agreement with Daniel's family," Michael continued.

"An agreement that was supposed to stay hidden."

Emma looked back at the letter.

Daniel's words continued.

"Lily found proof that I knew about the agreement."

"She thought I was part of the problem."

"But I was trying to fix what my family had done."

Emma whispered.

"What did his family do?"

Michael looked at Olivia.

Then he answered.

"They covered up a financial crime."

The words hung in the air.

Emma felt like the ground beneath her had shifted.

She had spent years believing her family tragedy began with Lily's illness.

Now she realized the pain started long before that.

Daniel's letter continued.

"Lily wanted to expose everything."

"She wanted your mother to know the truth about the people she trusted."

"But when I saw how determined she was, I became afraid."

"I knew powerful people were involved."

"I knew they would do anything to protect themselves."

Emma lowered the letter.

"Daniel knew Lily was in danger."

Nobody answered.

But nobody needed to.

The silence was enough.

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

The man she loved had known his daughter was carrying a dangerous secret.

And instead of telling her, he tried to control the situation alone.

She turned toward the small recording device inside the box.

"What is this?"

Michael looked at it.

"Lily recorded something the night she disappeared."

Emma picked it up slowly.

Her hands trembled.

"Why didn't anyone listen to it?"

Michael looked away.

"Because Daniel destroyed the first copy."

Emma felt a sharp pain in her chest.

"But he kept this one."

Olivia nodded.

"He couldn't throw it away."

Emma stared at the device.

A small piece of plastic.

A small piece of the truth.

She pressed the button.

At first, there was only static.

Then a familiar voice filled the room.

Lily.

Older than the child Emma remembered.

But still her daughter.

"Mom, if you are hearing this, then something happened and I wasn't able to tell you myself."

Emma covered her mouth.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

The sound of Lily's voice after so long was both beautiful and unbearable.

"I need you to know that Dad is not the person everyone thinks he is."

Emma closed her eyes.

Daniel's fear finally made sense.

"But he is also not the person you think he is."

Emma opened her eyes.

The sentence confused her.

Lily continued.

"Dad made mistakes."

"He lied."

"He was scared."

"But he tried to protect me."

Emma looked at Olivia.

The same message.

A complicated truth.

Nobody was completely innocent.

Nobody was completely guilty.

"I found out that Grandpa's company hurt people."

"I found out Dad helped cover it up years ago."

"But I also found out he was trying to expose the people responsible."

Emma listened carefully.

The recording continued.

"The night at the hotel, Dad came here to meet someone."

"He thought he was finally going to fix everything."

"But someone else came first."

The sound became quieter.

Lily's voice lowered.

"I don't know who they were."

"But I know they were afraid of what I discovered."

Emma looked at Michael.

He looked like he already knew what came next.

"I ran because I was scared."

"I thought Dad was the person I couldn't trust."

"But then Olivia found me."

"She believed me."

"She helped me hide the evidence."

Emma looked at Olivia with new understanding.

The woman who had been treated like a villain had been carrying Lily's final request.

The recording continued.

"Mom, please don't hate Dad without knowing everything."

"He made a terrible choice."

"But he loved us."

Emma wiped her tears.

The final words came slowly.

"If something happens to me, I need you to find the truth."

"Not revenge."

"Truth."

The recording ended.

Silence returned.

Emma held the device against her chest.

For years, she wanted someone to blame.

Someone simple.

Someone completely responsible.

But Lily had left her with something harder.

The truth was complicated.

Human.

Painful.

Daniel had failed them.

But he had also been fighting a battle she never knew existed.

Emma walked back toward the elevator.

Olivia followed quietly.

Michael stayed behind for a moment.

When Emma reached the doors, she stopped.

She looked at the letter.

Then at the recording device.

Then at the envelope with Daniel's confession.

There was still one person who needed to answer for everything.

She pressed the elevator button.

May you like

"I need to talk to my husband."

The doors opened.
