Chương 2
Olivia nodded slowly.
"She was scared."
The lights above them reflected against the black VIP card in Emma's hand.
For the first time that night, she realized the mystery was much bigger than she imagined.
The card was not the end of the story.
It was the beginning.
Emma looked around the reception hall and saw her husband laughing with relatives near the stage.
The same man who had held her hand through every difficult moment.
The same man who told her they would never know what truly happened to Lily.
A painful realization started forming in her mind.
Maybe he knew.
Maybe he always knew.
Olivia watched Emma's expression change and understood the truth she had just discovered.
"I am sorry," Olivia said.
Emma looked back at her.
"Sorry for what?"
Olivia hesitated.
"Sorry that I waited until tonight."
The room felt colder.
The celebration continued around them, unaware that a family's darkest secret had finally reached the surface.
Emma placed the VIP card back inside her handbag.
She was no longer shaking.
The sadness in her eyes had turned into determination.
"If my daughter carried this secret until her last day, then I will find every piece of the truth she left behind."
Olivia lowered her head.
Emma looked at her carefully.
"Why should I believe you now?"
Olivia had no answer.
Because both women knew trust was the first thing that had been destroyed.
At that moment, the wedding lights flickered slightly as the music changed.
Emma turned toward the stage.
Her husband was walking toward them, smiling as if nothing had happened.
But Emma saw something in his face.
A flash of fear.
A moment of recognition.
A sign that he had seen the card.
And he knew exactly why Emma was holding it.
The smile on Daniel Carter's face disappeared the moment he reached the two women standing beneath the golden lights of the reception hall.
For a few seconds, he said nothing.
He simply looked at Emma, then at Olivia, and finally at the handbag in Emma's hand.
That small movement told Emma everything she needed to know.
Daniel was not confused.
He was afraid.
"Emma," he said carefully, forcing his voice to remain steady, "what are you doing?"
The question sounded innocent to everyone else.
But Emma heard the fear hidden underneath it.
She had spent years studying every expression on her husband's face.
She knew when he was worried.
She knew when he was hiding something.
And right now, he was hiding everything.
"I could ask you the same thing," Emma replied.
Daniel glanced around the room.
The guests were beginning to notice the tension.
Some whispered quietly while others pretended not to watch.
He stepped closer and lowered his voice.
"Can we talk somewhere private?"
Emma almost laughed.
Private.
That word had followed her family for years.
Private conversations.
Private decisions.
Private secrets.
And somehow, every private moment had taken something away from her.
"No," Emma said.
Daniel looked surprised.
"No?"
"No more private conversations."
Her voice remained calm, but there was a strength in it that Daniel had not seen before.
"If there is something you need to tell me, you can tell me here."
Olivia stood silently beside them.
Her expression showed regret, but she did not walk away.
For the first time, Emma noticed that Olivia was not trying to protect herself.
She was waiting for the consequences.
Daniel looked at Olivia with anger.
"You told her?"
Olivia lowered her eyes.
"I should have told her years ago."
Daniel's face tightened.
"Do you understand what you have done?"
Emma immediately stepped between them.
"Stop."
The single word froze the conversation.
Daniel looked at his wife.
The woman who had spent years grieving beside him.
The woman who had trusted him completely.
The woman who now looked at him like a stranger.
"You knew about this card," Emma said.
Daniel did not answer.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
Emma nodded slowly.
"I knew it."
"Emma, listen to me."
"No."
Her eyes filled with tears, but she refused to let them fall.
"Tonight, I have listened enough."
The music in the hall faded as the wedding band noticed the uncomfortable atmosphere.
The once joyful room became painfully quiet.
Daniel took a breath.
"There are things you don't understand."
"Then explain them."
He looked away.
That was the moment Emma realized something even worse.
Daniel was not searching for the right words.
He was searching for a way to protect himself.
"What happened the night Lily disappeared?" Emma asked.
Daniel's face changed.
A small reaction.
Almost invisible.
But enough.
Emma saw it.
Olivia saw it too.
Daniel looked at Olivia.
"You promised."
Olivia shook her head.
"I promised Lily."
The mention of their daughter's name changed everything.
Daniel's anger faded into something closer to fear.
Emma felt her chest tighten.
"Lily knew?"
Nobody answered.
She looked at both of them.
"She knew something about that night."
Daniel finally spoke.
"Emma, Lily was confused."
Emma stared at him.
"Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Don't make her sound like she didn't understand what happened."
Daniel became silent.
Because he knew.
Lily had understood more than anyone gave her credit for.
Emma remembered the last conversation she had with her daughter.
It was only two days before Lily passed away.
Lily had held her hand tightly and tried to say something.
But she stopped herself.
At the time, Emma thought her daughter was too tired.
Now she wondered if Lily had been afraid.
Afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.
"Tell me the truth," Emma said.
Daniel looked at the floor.
"I was trying to fix a mistake."
Emma's heart sank.
"What mistake?"
He looked up slowly.
"The mistake of trusting the wrong person."
Emma looked toward Olivia.
"Her?"
Olivia immediately shook her head.
"No."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"It wasn't Olivia."
The answer surprised Emma.
For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Daniel continued.
"Olivia was trying to help Lily."
