Chương 4
A tear fell onto the paper.
Emma wiped it away quickly.
She did not want anyone to see her breaking.
Not anymore.
"I need you to know something important."
"Olivia did not betray me."
"She helped me."
"She was the only adult who listened when everyone else told me I was imagining things."
Emma looked toward Olivia.
The woman was crying silently.
She had carried Lily's secret alone for years.
"I found the VIP card because Olivia gave it to me."
"She told me to keep it hidden until I was old enough to understand what it meant."
Emma looked at Olivia in disbelief.
"You gave her the card?"
Olivia nodded slowly.
"Lily was afraid she would lose it."
Emma looked down at the letter again.
"Mom, the card is not proof that Olivia hurt me."
"It is proof that someone else was there."
"Someone who has been lying to you for years."
The room became completely silent.
Emma already knew who Lily meant.
But she needed to hear it.
She needed the final piece.
She turned the page.
The second half of the letter was shorter.
But every word carried more weight.
"Mom, Dad made a mistake."
"But I don't think he wanted me hurt."
"I think he was scared."
"I think he thought protecting the family meant protecting the secret."
Emma slowly looked at Daniel.
His face was pale.
The confidence he always carried was gone.
He looked like a man who had been running for too long and finally ran out of places to hide.
Michael stepped closer.
"There is more."
Emma looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
Michael looked uncomfortable.
"Lily left another message."
"Where?"
"In the place where everything started."
Emma frowned.
"The hotel?"
Michael nodded.
"The old private lounge downstairs."
Daniel immediately reacted.
"No."
Everyone turned toward him.
His reaction came too quickly.
Too strongly.
Emma stared at him.
"You don't want me to see it."
Daniel shook his head.
"Emma, please."
That was the first time she heard fear in his voice.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Fear.
"What is down there?" she asked.
Daniel looked at her.
"I was trying to protect you."
Emma almost whispered.
"You keep saying that."
Her eyes filled with disappointment.
"But every time you protected me, you took away my choice."
Daniel looked like he wanted to argue.
But he had no words.
Because she was right.
Protection without honesty was another form of control.
Emma folded Lily's letter carefully.
She placed it inside her handbag beside the black VIP card.
The two pieces of evidence that had brought her here now felt heavier than anything she had ever carried.
She turned toward the hallway leading to the lower level.
"I am going downstairs."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Emma."
She stopped but did not turn around.
"I spent years wishing someone would tell me the truth."
Her voice trembled slightly.
"Now that I finally have the chance to find it, nobody is stopping me."
Olivia walked beside her.
This time, Emma did not tell her to leave.
She still did not trust her completely.
But she understood one thing.
Olivia was not the enemy she thought she was.
Michael followed behind them.
The three of them walked through the quiet hallway beneath the wedding hall.
Behind them, Daniel remained standing among the guests.
A man surrounded by people but completely alone.
The elevator doors opened slowly.
As Emma stepped inside, she looked at the reflection of herself in the mirrored wall.
She barely recognized the woman staring back.
The woman who entered the hotel that night was searching for someone to blame.
The woman leaving the reception hall was searching for the truth.
The elevator descended into the older part of the building.
The lights flickered softly.
The sound of the celebration above became distant.
When the doors opened, Emma saw a narrow hallway leading to a locked wooden door.
Michael walked ahead and unlocked it.
The room beyond was dark.
Dust covered the furniture.
Old photographs rested on shelves.
And on the table in the center was a small box with Lily's name written on it.
Emma stopped breathing.
She knew immediately.
Lily had left this for her.
Michael stepped aside.
"She wanted you to find this when you were ready."
Emma slowly approached the table.
Her hand reached toward the box.
Before she touched it, she noticed something carved into the wooden surface.
A sentence written in Lily's handwriting.
"Mom, the truth hurts, but living without it hurts more."
Emma closed her eyes.
Then she opened the box.
Inside was a photograph.
A recording device.
And one final envelope.
This one was addressed to Daniel.
Emma stared at the envelope with Daniel's name written across the front.
For several seconds, she could not bring herself to touch it.
The room felt smaller with every passing moment.
The old walls seemed to hold every secret that had been buried inside them.
Olivia stood behind her quietly.
Michael remained near the doorway, giving Emma the space to decide what happened next.
Nobody rushed her.
Nobody told her what to do.
For the first time in years, the choice belonged completely to her.
Emma picked up the envelope.
The paper was slightly worn, as if Lily had held it many times before deciding where to leave it.
She turned it over and noticed that the seal had already been broken.
Someone had opened it before.
Her eyes moved slowly toward Daniel's name.
"Who read this?" she asked.
Michael looked down.
"I did not."
Olivia shook her head.
"Neither did I."
Emma's expression changed.
Then she understood.
Daniel.
Her husband had found this before she did.
She felt a deep sadness replace her anger.
Not because he had hidden something.
She already knew he had.
But because even after Lily left this world, he still chose silence.
Emma opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
The handwriting was different from Lily's.
May you like
It was Daniel's.
A confession.
