Chương 3
The garden seemed suddenly too quiet.
The balloons moved gently in the breeze.
The candles on the cake remained unlit.
Maya looked at Daniel.
Then at Linda.
Then at the folder.
She felt like she was standing at the edge of a door that could never be closed again once opened.
"What is inside that folder?"
Daniel answered.
"Proof."
Maya's eyes narrowed.
"Proof of what?"
Daniel looked at Linda before looking back at Maya.
"Of what happened before Ethan was born."
The words struck her.
Maya froze.
Ethan was watching her face carefully.
She forced herself to stay calm.
"Why would something from before Ethan was born involve him?"
Nobody answered immediately.
That silence was the answer she feared most.
Maya stepped back slightly.
Her heart was racing.
The entire afternoon had started with a birthday celebration.
Now she was discovering that the foundation of her family had been built on secrets.
Daniel slowly opened the folder.
He did not remove anything yet.
He simply looked at the papers inside.
"We should have told you a long time ago."
Maya stared at him.
"Then why didn't you?"
Daniel looked toward Ethan.
"Because we were afraid of what would happen when you knew."
Maya felt tears forming in her eyes.
Not because she was weak.
Because she finally understood how long everyone had been making choices for her.
She wiped her face quickly and held herself steady.
"Give me the papers."
Daniel hesitated.
Then he handed the folder to her.
Maya took it with both hands.
The weight of it felt heavier than paper.
Ethan moved closer to her.
She looked down at him and gave him a small reassuring smile.
But inside, she knew the next few minutes would change everything she thought she knew about her family.
Maya opened the folder slowly, almost afraid that the sound of the paper moving would make everything become real.
The first page was covered with official markings and dates, but she could barely focus on the words.
Her eyes moved across the page again and again, searching for something that would explain why everyone had looked at her like she was the last person who deserved to know.
Daniel watched her carefully.
Linda stood several feet away, her hands trembling slightly despite her effort to appear calm.
Ethan leaned against Maya's side, sensing that whatever was written inside those pages had changed the adults around him.
Maya turned the first page.
Then she stopped.
Her expression changed instantly.
She looked up at Daniel.
"This is not what you told me."
Daniel swallowed.
"I know."
Her fingers tightened around the folder.
"You said everything was complicated."
"It was."
"No."
Maya shook her head slowly.
"This is not complicated."
Her voice became quieter.
"This is a choice."
Daniel did not argue.
Because she was right.
Maya looked back at the documents.
The details were not just facts.
They were moments from her own life that other people had controlled without her permission.
She saw names.
Dates.
Signatures.
Conversations she had never been part of.
She felt as if she was reading about a stranger.
A stranger who happened to be her.
"What did you do?" Maya asked.
The question was directed at Linda.
The older woman closed her eyes briefly.
"I made a mistake."
Maya let out a small breath filled with disbelief.
"A mistake?"
Linda looked at her.
"I was trying to protect you."
"Everyone keeps saying that."
Maya looked around the garden.
"Protect me from what?"
Nobody answered.
The silence became unbearable.
Maya stepped closer to the table and placed the folder down.
"You all keep talking like I am fragile."
Her voice shook.
"Like I cannot handle the truth."
She pointed toward the papers.
"But I can handle the truth."
She looked directly at Linda.
"What I cannot handle is finding out that the people I trusted decided I was not allowed to have it."
Linda's face softened.
"I know."
Maya looked away.
For a moment, she almost saw her mother again.
Not the woman standing in front of her now.
But the woman who used to hold her hand when she was afraid.
The woman who stayed awake when Maya was sick.
The woman who promised she would always tell her the truth.
That memory made the betrayal hurt even more.
Ethan quietly asked, "Are you mad at Grandma?"
Maya immediately turned toward him.
She crouched down so they were at the same level.
Her expression softened.
"I am upset because grown-ups made choices without talking to each other."
Ethan looked toward Linda.
"Did Grandma do something bad?"
Maya felt her heart break.
She did not want him carrying this pain.
She did not want him thinking love disappeared every time someone made a mistake.
"I think Grandma made a decision she thought was right," Maya said carefully.
"But sometimes people can do something because they are scared and still hurt others."
Ethan nodded slowly.
He did not fully understand.
But he understood enough.
Daniel watched the conversation with sadness in his eyes.
He had always admired the way Maya protected their son.
Even now, when she was hurting, she was trying to protect Ethan from the worst parts of the situation.
"Maya," Daniel said quietly.
She stood up.
"What else don't I know?"
Daniel looked at the folder.
"There is one more thing."
Maya closed her eyes for a moment.
She almost laughed because she could not believe there could be anything else.
"Of course there is."
Daniel took a slow breath.
"The reason Linda kept the documents was because she believed telling you would destroy your relationship with someone you loved."
Maya looked at him.
"Who?"
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation brought the anger back.
"Who?"
Linda answered.
"Your father."
The words hit differently.
Maya became completely still.
Her father had been gone for several years.
May you like
His absence was something she had accepted, even if she had never fully healed from it.
"What does my father have to do with this?"
