Chương 1

""Maya had always believed that birthdays were supposed to be filled with laughter, but on the afternoon of her son's eighth birthday, the garden behind the family home became the place where everything she tried to protect began to fall apart.

The warm sunlight stretched across the grass, touching the colorful balloons, the decorated cake, and the small table covered with birthday plates and gifts.

For a few moments, it looked like a perfect family celebration.

Then Linda walked across the garden with a look in her eyes that made Maya's heart tighten.

Maya recognized that expression.

It was the same expression her mother had worn whenever she was about to reveal something painful and impossible to take back.

Maya held Ethan's hand gently as the boy stood beside her in his red and blue superhero shirt, trying to smile even though he sensed the tension around him.

"You need to hear the truth today," Linda said.

The words landed harder than Maya expected.

She looked toward Daniel, the man standing near the house entrance in his white dress shirt and dark tie.

He avoided her eyes for a second too long.

That small movement told Maya more than any explanation could.

"Not like this," Maya whispered.

Her voice was controlled, but her hands had already started trembling.

Ethan looked between the adults with confusion written across his face.

He was old enough to understand when people were angry, but still too young to understand why the people he loved were hurting each other.

Maya stepped closer to him, placing herself between him and the growing conflict.

Linda noticed the movement and took a slow step forward.

"Maya, you cannot keep pretending everything is fine."

Maya felt a sharp pain in her chest.

She had spent years pretending.

She had pretended for Ethan.

She had pretended for Daniel.

She had even pretended for herself.

But she never imagined the truth would arrive in front of a birthday cake with candles still waiting to be lit.

"I said not like this," Maya repeated.

Linda's expression hardened.

"You think protecting him means hiding everything from him?"

Maya looked down at Ethan.

The little boy squeezed her hand tighter.

His eyes were already filling with fear.

"Mom, what are they talking about?" Ethan asked quietly.

Maya opened her mouth, but no words came.

She wanted to take him inside.

She wanted to end the conversation.

She wanted to return to the simple version of their life where birthdays were only about presents and wishes.

Before she could move, Linda reached forward and grabbed Maya's wrist.

The sudden contact shocked everyone.

Maya pulled back immediately, her shoulder twisting as she tried to free herself.

"Don't touch me," Maya said sharply.

The garden went silent.

The music playing softly in the background seemed to disappear.

Ethan stepped closer to Maya, frightened by the sudden change in the adults' voices.

Linda released her wrist, but the damage had already been done.

Maya stared at her mother with disbelief and hurt.

She could feel everyone's eyes on her.

She could feel Daniel standing behind them, saying nothing.

That silence hurt more than the confrontation.

"Maya," Daniel finally said.

His voice was low and careful.

"Everyone needs to calm down."

He walked slowly across the grass, keeping his hands visible and his movements controlled.

He did not want to make Ethan more afraid.

He did not want to make the situation worse.

But Maya saw something in his face that she had never seen before.

Guilt.

"You knew," Maya said.

Daniel stopped.

The question was simple, but the meaning behind it was devastating.

Linda looked away.

Daniel swallowed.

"Maya..."

"No," she interrupted.

Her voice shook.

"Do not say my name like you are surprised I figured it out."

Ethan looked up at her.

"Maya, what is happening?"

Hearing him call her name instead of Mom made her heart break.

She immediately turned toward him and softened her expression.

"Everything is okay."

But even she knew the words sounded false.

Ethan was not a baby anymore.

He could feel when adults were lying.

Daniel moved closer.

"I wanted to tell you."

Maya laughed quietly, but there was no happiness in it.

"When?"

Daniel looked down.

"When was the right time?"

Maya looked around the garden.

The decorations.

The cake.

The balloons.

All the things she had prepared to make Ethan feel loved.

Everything suddenly felt like a stage built around a secret.

Linda folded her arms.

"You deserve to know what happened."

Maya looked at her mother.

"Then tell me why you waited until today."

Linda's face changed slightly.

For the first time, her confidence disappeared.

The question reached somewhere deeper.

"Because I was afraid," Linda admitted.

Maya stared at her.

Her mother had always seemed impossible to break.

But now she looked tired.

Older.

Like someone carrying a burden for many years.

Daniel reached into his pocket and looked toward the house.

Maya noticed the movement.

"What are you getting?"

He did not answer immediately.

Then he turned and walked toward the entrance.

Ethan watched him leave.

Maya felt a strange sense of dread.

She did not know what was inside the folder Daniel carried from the house.

She only knew that whatever it was had the power to change everything.

A few seconds later, Daniel returned holding a white document folder.

He stopped several feet away from them.

The papers inside were protected carefully, almost like they were something fragile.

Maya stared at the folder.

Her breathing became slower.

Her anger was still there, but now something else was replacing it.

Fear.

Daniel held the folder tightly.

"I never wanted you to find out this way."

Maya looked at Ethan.

The boy stood beside her, confused and scared, still holding onto her hand.

She realized the truth was no longer only about her pain.

May you like

It was about the child who trusted every person standing in that garden.

Daniel placed the folder on the table beside the birthday cake.
